Utah Foundation says Utah will contribute 257 million toward the 65.9 billion federal budget submitted by President Eisenhower. Per capita cost is 331 and a family of four would pay 1326, with year to year increases noted and a projected 434 million surplus.
Utah foundation calculations estimate Utah will pay 64.5 million in taxes for Air Force support 37 million for Navy 33.5 million for Army and 7.6 million for atomic energy under the proposed 1957 federal budget. Foreign aid would total 16.7 million with 97 million for direct military aid and 7 million for economic assistance.
Circleville residents Mr and Mrs George Fox and Mrs Fox s daughter Irene Ralphs attended Colline Mortensen s funeral in Parowan and joined birthday celebrations. Alice Worthen of Panguitch visited family while Sgt Dick Stevens returns from a Japan furlough. Elmer Jensen faces surgery in Salt Lake City. Ken Joseph and John Penderton joined services and visits. Parowan Literary Club met at Hazel Pendleton s home with poetry study. Rulon Dalton had surgery in Iron County Hospital. Norman Mortensen travelled from Spokane for Colline Mortensen s funeral and returned home.
From Salt Lake City to attend the funeral were De Vean Snow, Bonnie Peterson, Darlene Cook and Emma Sillus, friends of Miss Mortensen. Also present were William and Harry Knowles, father and brother of Jerry Knowles of Salmon, Idaho.
Mrs. Hazel Pendleton learns sister Jessie Sprague of Junction endured cataract surgery at St. Mark's Hospital then suffered a heart attack prompting travel to Lincoln Nebraska for their mother’s illness. Matheson sisters traveled from Nebraska to join their mother. Peter H. Gurr sustained multiple cracked ribs last Friday while helping spray cattle. Funeral attendees included Mr. and Mrs Ed Leu of Redwood City California and Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Robinson of Richfield. Blaine Broschardt underwent surgery at Iron Co Hospital Tuesday. Lena Benson will spend part of the winter in Springville with the Frank Patton family.
The Utah Wildlife Federation schedules a two day convention at the Hotel Newhouse Salt Lake City starting Saturday January 21 at 10 am and running through Sunday. Department of Fish and Game director J Perry Egan will summarize operations Sunday morning. Bill Beaveley, National Federation field representative from Colorado, speaks at the Saturday dinner. Spokesmen invite all sportsmen. only qualified delegates may vote on officers or policy, but all attendees can enjoy the program.
Republican fund raising event in Salt Lake City features a 100 per plate dinner on Friday with a national TV simulcast and Sen. Barry Goldwater as keynote. George R. Putnam, dinner chairman, announces sale briskly as efforts peak for next fall’s campaign. Goldwater to address, KSL to broadcast at 9:45 p.m. Also noted a Las Vegas couple welcomed a baby boy weighing three ounces at birth.
Rams defeat Rabbits 52 to 38 in a close game until the final three minutes. Don Stubbs led with 14 points, John Simkins 11, while Kent Whitney added key contributions as Parowan hosts a 105th Pioneer celebration with DUP events and a honoring of local sportsmanship.
Impressive funeral services directed by Bishop Sttoward Adams were held Thursday January 12 in Parowan Third Ward Chapel for Colline Mortensen daughter of Bart Ward and Vera Alma Robinson Mortensen. Burial followed in Parowan Cemetery with palbearers including Norman Romberger and Darell Schramm.
Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Paragonah Ward Chanel for Mrs Margaret Owens Barton 85 who died at her daughter Mrs Earl K Sherratts home in Los Angeles California last Tuesday Surviving besides her daughter are Thomas Gilbert and Ted Barton Parowan Friends may call at the Southern Utah Mortuary from 6 until 8 p m and on Saturday at the Ted Barton residence in Parowan from 10 a m until time for the services Burial will be in the Paragonah Cemetery.
Parowan PTA has scheduled a meeting for January 26 to discuss the town’s school building needs. All parents and interested citizens are urged to attend the session.
The Parowan Third Ward Relief Society plans its next meeting at the Iron Co Rest Home. Mrs Gary Bentley will deliver the literary lesson. Children will be cared for at the Third Ward Chapel as usual.
Karen Fife spent the weekend in Richfield with her sister’s family the Dr. Aries. Pudge Madsen of Henderson visited with the Nels Madsen and Jay Davenport families. President and Mrs. Voyle L. Munson of Lea Utah visited relatives. Susannah J. Hulet and Otto Dalley with Donna Davenport noted. A baby girl was born to Leonard and Dorothy Mickelson of Powell Wyoming. Von Davis and daughter from Richfield visited Otto Dalley. Ann Madsen departed for Southern California to visit her daughters and son. Lois Hulet hosted a Primary In Service lesson with Sven Primary officers and teachers. Jay Davenport family visited William Davenport in Paragonah as the family gathered.
Chester A. Thomas of Springdale Utah was elected president of the Southern Utah Wildlife Federation at its annual Cedar City election. He succeeds Norman Day of Parowan who led the group for two years. The federation includes clubs from Beaver Parowan Cedar City Hurricane St. George and Panguitch.
The Medical Forum series starts in Cedar City on Thursday February 2 at 7 30 p.m. in the College of Southern Utah new auditorium with a Poliomyelitis panel. Moderated by Dr R W Farnsworth, panelists include Dr R G Williams Dr M K McGregor Dr P K Edmunds and a Salt Lake City specialist. Public questions may be submitted to the Iron County Record or KSUB by January 26.
The three act comedy Let Me Grow Up will be presented February 16 with Lexie Margaret Barton Muriel Emma Jane Benson Matt Matt Lamoreaux Nora Fleming Susan Benson Aunt Lydia Helen Hatch Mary Jo Sonja Adams Arden Brenda Joseph Bill Henderson Steve Orten Mrs Holden LaReta Decker in the cast. Directed by Mrs Jean Hendrickson.
Mrs. Marvin Graff will chair Utah heart drive February 1 to 29 1956 affiliated with the American Heart Association. Dr. Drew M. Petersen notes Utah funds aim for 80000 and last year donated 150.77 locally. He stresses prevention early diagnosis and research areas rheumatic fever artery hardening and high blood pressure. Seventy five percent of Utah Heart Fund contributions stay for local programs with the rest supporting national research and education.
