A 20 percent tax delinquency last fall leaves about $19,000 unpaid, risking budget shortfalls. If only $10,000 arrives soon, the district may need to raise revenue or cut the program. Other units face similar issues and a levy increase of at least one mill is likely to be asked to cover a projected nine to eight and a half month school year.
New civil suits filed include Sarah Gregory vs Archie Gregory for divorce with support issues. Kopp's Garage v Cedar Construction Co for $223.52 on account. Leona Stapley Behunin v Don Sylvester Behunin for divorce with non support and custody plus alimony claims. Clarence Hull v Irene Hull for divorce with desertion cited. Temporary alimony sought in the Behunin case and wage garnishment possible.
The Cedar County Times reports the deaths of Mrs. Caroline R. Jones, Mr. John Seaman, and Mrs. Lucella Derry Williams in Cedar City. Jones died from paralysis after a severe shock. Seaman, a civil war veteran, passed peacefully after returning from Salt Lake City where he spoke on Lincoln’s birthday. Williams, wife of Bishop Riley G. Williams, died of pneumonia after concealing illness. Funeral services and hospital notices are noted with sympathy extended to the families.
Announcement from Stake clerk G W Es Blin Jr states the monthly High Council meeting will convene in the Seminary building at 2 p m on Sunday February 23. A special High Council session is planned and all members are urged to attend. The monthly Union meeting will be held at Cedar Second Wave Chapel at 3 p m the same day, with Sunday school at 2 p m in the Recreation hall.
Postal Inspector Danvers will visit Cedar City this week to assess routing Kane County mail via the new tunnel road. Discontinuance of the D and R G Kaine into Marysvale worsened service, but the route could deliver twenty two hours earlier. Cedar City Chamber of Commerce pushed the idea to the Washington Department, delaying contract awards pending study.
Utah Taxpayer warns Chicago faces $300 million indebtedness and daily $50 000 interest as public funds vanish. Unpaid employees, dismissed departments, and halted education threaten safety and services amid extravagant politics and poor budget controls. The taxpayer urges sound economies and a reckoning.
A West end citizen writes to the Times condemning the proposal to move the county seat to Cedar City. He cites high taxes delinquent roads and inadequate school facilities arguing the move serves a self centered minority and would harm Iron County. The author’s name is withheld.
Ogden reports from engineers of the U S Bureau of Public Roads that the scenic tunnel through the cliffs on the East rim of Zion National Park along the Zion Mt Carmel road is finished and the road will be formally opened June 1.
Parowan East Ward basketball team faces St George Monday night to decide the four stake championship including Beaver Parowan St George and Moapa. Winner advances to division games at Richfield and proceeds fund travel for the winning team.
A quiet wedding Friday night united Ralph Mitchell and Milza Lorna Benson, two popular local youths. Ralph is the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter C. Mitchell, Lorna is Alma Benson’s only daughter. A reception followed at the Mitchell home with family and friends in attendance.
At last Saturday’s meeting the district approved a 15000 agreement with Branth Agricultural College to host two year high school courses. Previously costs ran at 105 per student. The board also seeks to add Smith-Hughes work at Cedar High School, matching Parowan’s program.
The Utah Parks Co. in the Union Pacific system cuts the five day all inclusive Scenic Loop tour from Cedar City to 74.60 dollars. The trip covers Zion Grand and Bryce canyons Kinab forest and Cedar breaks with four nights lodging fourteen meals and 460 miles by bus.
Sheriff Leigh reported five youths arrested Tuesday for stealing chickens. The accused are Jack Stunter Olene Davis Warren Bringhurst Jessa Rowley and Flomer Brumley. All names were withheld pending arraignment that afternoon.
At a special meeting of the East Ward Relief Society the new officers were sustained and set apart. Grace Gure presides, Jania Bennett is first counselor, Florence Joseph second, Dorothy Ward secretary. Fifty members attended with the Fast Ward Bishopric and Stake Presidency. An evening of entertainment is planned for March 17 with a play directed by Will I. Adams to raise funds for furnishing the new Relief Home with rugs and chairs. Regular meetings move to Wednesdays.
Mr and Mrs John VI Stephens depart this morning for Salt Lake City for a short visit, planning to stay a few days.
John Peterscot, a Tooele worker, renews his subscription and says he enjoys reading the paper to learn how everything is in Little Parowan. He shares the issue with his friend Orton Rasmussen.
Notices from the secretary announce the annual meeting of the Porowan Reservoir Company on Sunday evening at 3 o'clock in the library auditorium. Officers will report, and a board of directors for the coming year will be elected. George D. Morris is the president and John W. Bentley is secretary.
A large effort removes about thirty old dead trees from the school grounds. Messrs Meeke Dalton Jos R Bentley and Thomas Skougard offered to remove them at a nominal fee, with Principal Hatch pledging payment. Last trees cut Saturday and wood is being removed this week. Hatch also states a full time groundsman will be hired this summer to maintain and extend improvements.
A Utah lawyer urges a special session passage of a law taxing bank shares retroactively to 1925, claiming state power to tax national banks must be allowed. A State Prospect of Inquiry notes federal limits on taxing national banks and calls for amending the constitution to permit such taxation while addressing uniform property assessment rules.
Ben Lemmon and Lenumen, speaking for the Beryl United Colony Farming Association, petition Iron County officials for a new school in the Beryl district for the coming year. They note enough children and expected in-migration justify a school and potential private funding, while the county focuses on road work. The clerk directs that the Iron County School District handles school establishment.
Information given this week by the Reverend W. M. Forsyth of Cedar City states the Utah synod of the Presbyterian church voted to appropriate all of the money to recondition the chapel at Parowan. Mr. Forsyth and Mr. Hamilton of Toqueryville were named as a committee to survey needed improvements and report, with a plan to visit next Monday after postponements.
Construction on the Z onion Mt Carmel highway by Nevada Contracting Co. nears completion with about a quarter million dollars spent. Final tasks remain by the Mukuntuweap River near park HQ and Fine Creek plus surfacing from the East portal to the park boundary, likely to finish by simmer. Park Superintendent EB T Scoven warns travelers of possible delays as work continues.
