Cold Wave Grips Region With Record Low Temperatures

A severe cold spell drives temperatures below zero through Monday to Wednesday with pipes freezing and workers feeling the strain. By Thursday the cold deepens with readings near 71 below at Skougards and 35 below in the valley Bay Farms before moderating today. Reports from nearby areas show Montana at 56 below and similar frigid conditions nationwide.

Infant Dies From Influenza in McGill Funeral Here

Mr and Mrs Ross Benson of McGill Nevada mourn a baby girl who died of influenza last Saturday. The infant, under nine months, had prior health problems including a kidney loss after an operation. Burial occurred here after a travel route via Salt Lake City due to road conditions. Funeral services were held in the East ward chapel with W Clair Stawley presiding. The service included readings by Mauda Lyman and songs by local singers. Survived by parents and two brothers with one brother having died earlier. Sympathy extended from Cedar City where Mrs Benson was raised.

Legion to Present Play Monday Night

The American Legion will stage a Lincoln birthday play Monday evening at the recreation hall directed by Winston Orton. Two suits filed this week in district court. Herr Sparks sues Geo N Rhodes and others of Hamilla Valley for foreclosure on a $200 mortgage plus interest and costs. Southern Utah Power Co sues Charter Probst and EF Nordberg for $302.70 with interest and costs for merchandise and service.

Paragonah Seeks Renewal of Light and Power Contract

Paragonah officials asked Parowan city for renewal of their light and power contract, urging concessions to allow 26 street lights at no cost. The delegation noted Parowan’s higher rates and warned against any increase. No action taken. both sides will study options and meet before the contract expires. An inquiry into locating a new manufacturing plant was also discussed with I S Noah of Cedar City, with a Saturday site visit planned.

Infants Christenings Mark Sunday Services in City

Three infant children were baptized during Sunday afternoon services in the East and West wards. Eldon Dewey Boniley was named for Mr and Mrs Dewey Boniley and James Clyde Mitchell for Mr and Mrs John Mitchell. Edward L Barton was named for Mr and Mrs Meeks Barton. Missionaries in the ward areas spoke during regular testimony bearing. Evening programs featured scouts Vanguarda and Juniors in conjoint sessions.

Miss Williams to Give Social Service Lesson

Announcement notes that the Relief Societies of both wards will meet next Wednesday at 2 p m for a social service lesson. Miss Margaret Williams primary supervisor for the Snon County schools will speak on Testing Manta. Members of both societies are urged to attend and previously scheduled words will be rescheduled. Miss Luella Hyatt supervisor at Salt Lake County General Hospital was elected president of the Utah State Nursing Association District at a convention last Saturday at the Newhouse hotel. A Farowan girl, she has held her supervisory post for years and is noted for her success in nursing.

Game Birds Not Harmed By Poisoned Hay Leaves

Authorities report no harmful effects on game birds from poisoned grain baits used for rodent control. Tests cited from the U S Department of Agriculture and the U S Biological Survey show pheasants and quail unaffected by practical bait formulations. Utah tests at Springville hatchery with cooperation from the State Game Department and Biological Survey confirm Chinese pheasant resistance to the strychnine level used.

Marchaze license demand wanes in county records

The county reports licenses issued by the clerk’s office have slowed with the last license granted about three months ago. Attendance at Fast Ward Sunday school broke records last Sunday with 204 attendees.

School District In Relatively Good Shape

The Isau County School District is fiscally sound with $20 per capita state support and higher local tax receipts. Debt service and past cuts have left operating costs below state averages, though total per capita costs exceed the state average due to prior building programs. The board approved more defined economies and a new music plan from first grade through high school, as the Friday session studied district matters.

Rosenberg Sentenced and Appeals Notice Filed

Delos Stosenberg was sentenced to up to five years in the State penitentiary after a jury conviction on a statutory offense. He immediately gave notice of appeal and sought a transcript of record. Juror affidavits question the June date of the crime and allege the defense was misdirected on that timing. He claimed he was fishing on June 26 when the offense allegedly occurred.
