Parowan City Adopts Budget With Bond Plans For 1940s

At a special meeting Wednesday night Parowan City adopted a budget totaling 25 055 for the coming year. Major appropriations cover bond payments and interest on bonds, hydro electric and water extension bonds, and city offices. Changes include increases for water system operation and maintenance, and a rise in police salaries, with several expenditures cut or reallocated. Mayor Match outlined plans to meet future bond payments through PWA revenues and funds, noting potential debt-free status by 1945 with a self sustaining hydro electric and water system. The session adjourned after approving monthly bills and minor items, with John W. Gurr visiting from Ogden for the holidays.

Former State Senator Dees Dies at 63 in Hurricane

David Hirsch Dees, 63, a former state senator from Washington County and a prominent business figure, died Sunday at his home in Hurricane. He helped organize the Hurricane Canal Company, led local banks, and served as Rockville bishop. He was Washington County representative 1923–32 and state senator 1924–27. His funeral was held Tuesday at Zion Park Stake tabernacle in Rockville.

Jury List Drawn For Year Of 1939

Iron County jury list is drawn by commissioners Joseph F. Holybok and Wm. B. Pryor. The register includes taxpayers and citizens from Cedar City Parowan Summit and Cedar City with about 100 names per 100 votes cast in the last general election. Round-Up Graduation Reunion at 37-37 in Derby

Graduates from 37-37 met in Derby for a reunion on Wednesday December 28. Attendees traveled from California, Arizona, Provo, Salt Lake City, Cedar City, Sumast, and included many from Varowan and Paragonah. Regrets came from Mrs. Louise C. Adams, quarantined with mumps and chicken pox, and Senator Glenn B. Snow who was in Salt Lake City on business. Dancing dominated the program with punch and wafers served by flag members. several local residents attended. The gathering, led by originators Shirley Warren and Carma Orton, praised the event and hoped to make it annual.

District Judge Will J Hoyt published the 1939 Fiji County court calendar listing opening dates and days for each term along with motion and probate days. Halterman Heads 09 Conservation Committee Election

The annual meeting of the County Agnewllteal Conservation Association at Parowan on December 27 elected Halterman of Parowan as president and J M Palmer of Cedar City and T W Robb of Paragonah as board members for 1939. First and second alternates G Williams of Kanarra and John M Tullis of New Castle were named. The new committee will meet January 3 in the Local Extension Office to set a budget for the first half of 1939. The secretary and treasurer will be appointed by the County Committee with approval of the State and National 4 H A A authorities.

Provo Firm Wins Building Contract for Cedar City High School

A Provo firm identified as Talbop and Talboe won the Cedar City high school building contract after bid openings by the state Department of Education. The project must finish within 140 days from December 270h, with an expected September 1939 opening. Total awarded amount listed as 4194.187, Ryberg Brothers of Salt Lake City placed next at 190,743, and Paul Paulo & Company of Salt Lake City third at 193,000.

City clears back light and water rents in Parowan

Parowan City reports progress in collecting overdue water and light charges. As of January 1, 1988, delinquent accounts totaled 32449.60. By year end most debtors paid, with some on monthly plans. the city’s plan waives enforcement and requires current bills plus a portion of delinquent amounts. The mayor and council oversaw staff enforcement. several residents were cut off temporarily, but few homes remain without service unless vacant.

County Budget Hearing Set For Tomorrow

A public hearing on a proposed county budget of 10707389 will be held tomorrow at 10 o'clock in the courthouse. The tentative budget shows an increase of about 10996 over last year driven by over 7000 for old age pensions and 2500 for the county hospital. The general fund receives 320000, the hospital 20000, and officer salaries rise to 21210 with deputy sheriff pay up 300. Road expenses are set at 16406 and interest/sinking at 13167. Total appropriations near 2 million, with revenues and open items subject to change at tomorrow's meeting.

Thorley Named Head Of Cedar Senior Council 1959

Melvin R Thorley elected president of Cedar Senior Council at the Cleotton Tuemlay banquet, succeeding Arthur Gardner who died during the year. Thorley, manager of the Cedar slow leases, active olive worker, and former County Brat Removal Committee cochair. Officers include C B Ooley as vice president and Marvin Jones, Walker as directors. New board members Meavin Joget and Corry. Warher reelected. Funeral attendance noted for Mr and Mrs Ormon Tweshtat. Relatives from Tang Treachs visited.
