The East and West wards launch a joint fundraising drive to finance ward budgets. Families pay assessments from 1 to 6 dollars by January 15 to cover lights water janitor fuel and related expenses. Entertainments in the season include plays dances and a Christmas Eve program with free budget tickets for holders.
City Health Physician F J Burton warns residents about a prevalent cold and influenza outbreak sweeping the country and threatening school closures. He urges airing rooms twice daily, fresh air, early bed, and keeping sick children at home to prevent spread. The illness is already affecting students and teachers, with grades hit hard and potential serious outcomes if not contained.
Parowan city council voted to continue free electricity for outside holiday lighting. Residents may place lights on evergreen trees or decorations on lawns and sidewalks, attaching before the meter and calling city workers to connect. City crews will light the Library lawn tree and Legion Memorial monument as last year.
Pat Fenton of Parowan was elected to Scabbard and Blade at the University of Utah. He is among 25 Goats in the informal initiation week, marking the symbolic watch-fires on the mountain before the Sunday Hotel Utah ceremony. Fenton, a Parowan High School graduate, is a junior studying law.
Paragonah residents Mr. and Mrs. Timothy R. Robinson will celebrate their Golden Wedding on Monday December 18 with a social and dance at the Paragonah school house. A family gathering is planned and invitations extend to relatives in surrounding towns. They have three living children Ray Robinson Verda Benson and Effie Beauregard. The Ob as t u a ry of Mrs Sarah A Stapley was attended in Cedar City by Oscar Ty Orton and family Samuel T Orton Lorin Orton and Claude Orton.
James C. Robinson, president of the Tyron County School Board, was re elected from District No 2 in a Wednesday vote over write ins Joseph Holyoak and Albert E Adams. Robinson won about 80 percent district wide with 115 to 29 and 1 for Adams.
Mayor Hatch informs applicants for 1940 census work to wait for local office setup. Jobs filled locally, no Washington inquiries. Local offices open after year end, with details on pay, duration, districts, and supervisor. War veterans or widows get preference if equally qualified.
The West Ward Chapel and Recreation Hall exterior woodwork received a new paint coat to enhance appearance and wood preservation. Total cost 117.09 with half from the presiding bishop's office and half by the ward. Bishop Bayles notes the ward raised over 1 000 to reduce the debt from last month's drive and carnival, aiming to liquidate the balance soon for dedication. Lucius Benson has spent a week in Iron County hospital for leg ulcers but expects to go home this weekend.
The East ward chapel begins a multi part renovation funded by last week’s banquet auction and dance proceeds plus church funds. Workers will repaint exterior woodwork repair the roof and leaks, replace radiators, fix interior plaster, and may expand to further interior upgrades if volunteers contribute labor.
Funeral services were held for Mrs Sarah A Stapley 69 in the First Ward Chapel Cedar City following years of ill health including a leg amputation after a severe infection. The service featured solos duets talks and sentiments with burial dedication by Bishop Grimshaw. Surviving children include Orley Arthur Norman Stapley Mrs Oscar Orton Mrs Ruth Watkins and Mrs Leona Buchanan.
Two pairs of individuals from Milford, both Robert David Killam and Nola May Swallow, aged 27 and 24 respectively, obtained licenses. A Kanab resident, Graham Duncan McDonald, 24, and Cedar City resident Mary Macfarlane, 19, also secured licenses. Meanwhile Mrs Della Gurt hosted a Cedar City reunion where eight former classmates visited for her birthday, including Florence Curry and Lillian Grimshaw among others.
The West Ward Sunday School honored Mrs. Belle Matheson upon her retirement after over fifty years as a teacher. About fifty guests attended a social with a program highlighting her activities in the Sunday School and ward stake. A luncheon followed and she received a copy of a church work titled A Commentary on the Book of Mormon.
The Federal Social Security Board announces a new Richfield field office to serve Emery Wayne Garfield Kane Piute Sanpete Millard Beaver Iron and Washington counties. Sherman H. Ruesch named manager, a Utah native and former Salt Lake City assistant manager, with duties including issuing Social Security numbers and guiding claims for benefits beginning January 1940.
City council approves WPA work to enlarge and beautify the local cemetery next Tuesday morning. About twenty men will be employed for several months under a plan funded by the city with a small assessment on lot owners. The project includes a new railing fence, rock posts, and new water lines, plus other improvements.
The East Ward MIA drama department will present a three act comedy titled To Share Alike directed by Carol Wright on Thursday evening December 14 in Recreation Hall. Budget tickets are on sale in both wards and acceptable for admission. Families lacking budget tickets can apply the admission price on ward maintenance tickets.
