Parowalt Exchange club plans luncheon meeting at Cedar Breaks Cafe Monday noon to back six man football at Para High School. L B Bennett says school board favors equipment but field not ready this fall. Several venues discussed as possible sites while emphasis remains on enabling the game this year. A combined meeting of two ward groups in the city is set for Sunday at 2 o clock in the East Ward chapel. Roscoe Booth from Dover City, recently back from a mission in England, will speak. All Yardy members are urged to attend if possible while the regular Stake Utin meeting returns to Ce 4r City that afternoon with officers and teachers of the Taous auxiliary organizations expected to join.

Attractive Programs On W Entertain Series At Utah

The University of Utah's twenty two year old Minds spd Artists Series announces a five recital three concerts and one travelogue lineup for 1939 41 season. Highlights include the United States Navy Band with a Med States Navy Band substitute and readings by Merbert Knapp and Robert Frost. The events will be staged on the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City with all seats available to the public.

Los Angeles Man Visits Early Potato Acreage

Los Angeles broker George L Cassidy of Higgins Cassidy & Co visited County Friday to inspect pre season potato acreage. He told the County Agent the crop meets expectations and that market prices are uncertain but outlooks suggest satisfactory returns for growers. Cassidy expects shipments to Los Angeles to begin September 1 with about 10 carloads daily leaving the local railroad during harvest.

State Health Laboratory Aids Southern Utah Residents

The Iron County Hospital unit of the State Board of Health Laboratory reports its best month with nearly 600 specimens examined for Southern Utah physicians and Cedar City residents. It stresses its role as non diagnosing support to doctors, offering free public health tests and minimal clinical fees. The bacteriologist can type pneumonia sputum to identify one of 32 germs, enabling early serum treatment to reduce death risk.

West Ward M. I. A. Elects New Officers

New officers were chosen for the West Ward Young Men’s Mutual Improvement Association and Young Women’s Mutual Improvement Association as the season approaches. Evan Bayles presides over the YMMA with Ray Mortis as first assistant and Quentin Page as secretary. Phoebe Taylor leads the YWMA with Bess Miller as first assistant and Mable M. Williams as secretary. East Ward officers largely repeat last year, while West and East opening socials are set for September 12 and classes begin September 19.

WPA Sewing Center Opens For Winter

The WPA sewing center resumes after a six week layoff. Instructor Mrs Luella A Dalton returned from Salt Lake City with training and announces sessions at the High School Home Making rooms. Virginia Mortensen Wins Honors at BYU

Virginia Mortensen at Provo was among thirty two BYU students named to the spring quarter honor list. Registrar John Mayes announced Mortensen, an upper division student, earned sixteen or more credit hours of A grades, placing her on the list of nearly 3,000 students.

Car overturn injures farm workers en route to pea field

A vehicle owned by W. L. Adams and driven by Billie White overturned near the Parowan road while transporting workers to Sam Haltenman farm to pick peas. The driver Billie White and Mrs. Miriam Moore were injured but not seriously. others suffered minor scratches and bruises.

Beaver Man Dies From Accident Injuries

John Thomas Joseph a Beaver resident died from injuries after his horse was knocked by a bull during a ride Saturday evening. He suffered brain and back injuries and remained unconscious until his death Monday afternoon. He was born in Minesville Ohio in 1850 and later settled in Adamsville before moving to Beaver in 194. He celebrated a golden wedding in May with his wife Annie E Guan. He left a large family including eight children, two sisters, 36 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services were held in Beaver East Ward Chapel yesterday.

Funeral Services Held for Eliza Hobson Jackson

Funeral services were held last Friday at 2 PM in the West Ward chapel for Mrs. Eliza Hobson Jackson. Bishop T Wen dell Bayles led the service assisted by Irene Marsden at piano and the Singing Mothers directed by Zofia P Topham. Speakers included Barbara M Adams and Walter C Mitchell with closing remarks by Bishop Bayles. The cemetery grave was dedicated at Nugh L Adams.

Labor Troubles Interfere With Pod Pea Picking

Disturbances during the week tied to transient pickers seeking higher wages disrupted pod pea harvests. Deputy Sheriff William M. Dalter found agitation aimed at organizing all pickers for better pay, but local residents appeared uninvolved. Most pickers returned to fields with no lasting consequences.

Cedar City lists J. C. Haws and A. B. Larson. Paragonah, Kanarra, Modena, New Castle, Lund and other settlements show numerous assignments and staff names.

Final Rites Sunday for Eugene Dalton

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the West Ward chapel for Eugene Dalton who died Friday morning after a long illness. Elders conducted, choirs sang Rock of Ages, Mary Topham and Silas Topham provided music, and Luella A. Dalton read sentiments from Mrs. Olive Carroll. The grave was dedicated by Silas J. Ward.

Parks Theatre Fire Destroys Films and Equipment

Fire at Parks Theatre caused about $1000 in loss including 12 000 feet of film and most projection equipment. Operator John Seaman escaped with no injury as flames spread quickly after a gun in the projection room exploded. Manager Mel Thorley estimates total damage and shows closure for several days.
