Iron County commissioners set the current year tax levy at 30 mills up from last year as valuations drop about five percent to 9.577 million dollars. The plan adds road funding and separate city levies while noting 18 thousand dollars of refunding bonds due in 1932 and 1933, to be funded by future levies.
The Southern Utah Dairy Company held its annual meeting on Wednesday evening, reelecting the same five directors for another year. Abbott and Lyman draw two year terms, Paxton one year, while Pendleton and Topham continue with two year terms. Officers report rising business volume and increased assets despite lower dairy prices. about 30,000 dollars paid out for milk and cream.
Mr. W. J. Lowder and wife attend a Biological Survey convention in Strawberry Valley with trappers and employees from across the state. George E. Holman leads the event with a Denver representative and President Harvey of the State Woolgrowers Association present. Barnyard golf, baseball and target shooting provide recreation as Lowder sustains a facial collision ending his run for high score. Kenneth Lyon of Panguitch wins the honor for Southern Utah.
Bishop Mitchell reports that the First Ward led the stake in sacrament meeting attendance during June. Returns for July are not yet received but a favorable outcome is expected for the month. August began with cool attendance and is hoped to spur other wards to higher turnout.
The East Ward relief Society holds its regular monthly meeting next Wednesday afternoon at the usual place. Officers urge all members to attend as important matters will be presented and decided, and every member should be informed and participate.
By vote of the East Ward membership at the Sacrament meeting last Sunday afternoon, Paul Vi. Adams was sustained as a bishopric member. L. J. Adsing was released with thanks, Wm. J. Gurr advanced to first councillor, and Adams became second councillor.
Mr. A. W. Richards stopped Tuesday to visit relatives and friends on his six thousand mile solo trip across the West and Canada. He has been traveling six weeks and finds the trip wonderful despite loneliness. His sisters Mrs. Dougal and Catherine joined him from Salt Lake City to tour the parks this week.
Mr. and Mrs. George Stevens and others traveled with James 5 Green to Salt Lake City on July 24. They left Parowan at seven and reached Fillmore in time for a parade before the dedication of Utah's first state capital building and its park museum. Stevens and Mortensen represented Purowan National Farm Loan Association at a convention at the Hotel Utah by the Federal Land Bank of Berkeley. Horace Burton returns from Colorado after combining business matters with a family visit.
IT Patrick road engineer Wil Osbourn projects completing Highway 91 through Iron County will cost about 335000 with the county paying roughly 100000. The plan includes four segments from Parowan to Buckhorn Flat and Buckhorn Flat to Beaver, plus Winn Hollow to Coal Creek and Buckhorn Flat graveling. Total county share is about 83900.72, with potential overages for rights of way, aiming to finish within four years if funds allow.
Judge Cox ordered jurors drawn for the September term. On August 1 the Clerk Treasurer and deputy County Attorney selected jurors from Parowan Cedar City and nearby areas. The list includes John H. Gurr RK L. Fenton John M. Ward John T. Mitchell C Golden Paramore Taylor Miller Walter C G Mitchell Herbert S Hyatt Ashton Jones Milton Tile and many others. The venire is placed with the sheriff for service and jurors may report September 3. Several local legion members left for a Provo convention.
Aunt Esther Orton telephoned to report she picked a pan full of first ripe tomatoes this season with more on the vines. She explains how she kept worms off and how she got a two week to month advantage in ripening. Mr and Mrs Harold Mitchell return from Salt Lake City after summer school at the University of Utah.
Parowan City Council fixes 24 mill tax levy for 1930 with a new 1 mill special guaranty fund and eliminates the memorial fund levy. Bond interest 6 mills, bond sinking 6 mills, contingent 5 mills, streets and sidewalks 4 mills, public library 2 mills. Recorder Dick Benson notes utilities must cover remaining bond needs. Council also appropriates 25 dollars for the 24th celebration and addresses gravel trap notices as they adjourned.
A district court filing during the week includes Stocking v Alyin Stocking seeking divorce with nonsupport and costs plus attorney fees. Another suit by Sam Cine as administrator of Isaac M Bozarth estate seeks foreclosure of a warehouse stake. An appeal from Cedar City Justice Court involves the State suing John Fretwell over a $4.60 check without funds.
The State Board of Equalization ordered 10 percent reductions on range sheep and 15 percent on blooded sheep in Iron County. The action followed a request from the Board of County Commissioners who urged a cut due to high county sheep values relative to market conditions.
Mrs. Ella Evang Corbridge and her daughter Lois visit from Lyman Wyoming with relatives and friends and plan time in Mineraville before returning home. Mr BR L Fenton visited Salt Lake City this week and may travel to Price soon on business. East Ward Primary held a Tuesday picnic in the public square enjoyed by the children.
Mrs Harold Mitchell spent two or three days in Cedar City during the week as a guest of Mrs Orange A Olsen.
Forest Ranger Frank Seaman traveled from Bear Valley with Samuel Abbott to a Wednesday dairy company meeting in town.
Mrs. Dora Rolling and her sister Mrs. Etha Corbrodge from Wyoming stayed several days in Cedar City with another sister Mrs. Frank N McConnell.
It is reported Albert Mathesoy who left for San Francisco recently was in an auto wreck on the trip and was badly bruised. Details of the severity and cause were not learned.
Rumor says Misses Ann and Allen Taylor were struck by a car returning from golf. They were hospitalized with injuries not believed serious. The driver has offered a settlement for the accident.
District road engineer William Osbournh visited the city on Wednesday for matters related to construction plans and traffic safety projects.
Nephi L. Morris and Harvey H. Cluff from Salt Lake City were in town during the week for business matters.
Mr and Mrs Melburn Benson were in town briefly last week and returned Monday to Feter gen Utah where Melburn works in the livestock business.
Mr. M. E. Dunton of Paragouah visited Parowan on Monday morning as a business traveler, meeting local contacts and inspecting potential arrangements for commerce.
Miss Ilene Johnson, employed at Bryce Canyon Lodge, spent a weekend at home on a brief vacation.
The Utah service station, under new management, plans improvements by cementing the area from the building front to the sidewalk, enhancing the storefront.
Messra. Wilford Day Walter Mitchell Wm. H. Lyman and J. Harold Mitchell made a business trip to Salt Lake City and Ogden the first of the week.
From County Record it is learned that Miss Maxine Froyd of Cedar City has been employed as head of the home economics department at Parowan High School to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Miss Arvilla Day.
Iron County Record notes a fathers and sons outing August 8 to 10 at the old Urie Ranch near Canyon Creek Inn. The three day program includes camp setup, flag raising, hikes, contests, games, a big camp fire, and a Sunday service led by Arthur Fife. Prizes honor top contestants and best performances.
Albert E. Adams heads a committee formed by the Iron County Woolgrowers Association and the state association to run an Eat More Lamb week from August 23 to 30 in Parowan. James Robinson chairs with Clarence Richarde and Ray D. Gofarmer. plans call for advertising lamb, distributing menu booklets, featuring lamb in markets, and urging hotels and diners to serve it. A banquet was suggested to promote lamb's importance locally and encourage increased consumption. Further details to follow.
Messrs. Peter H. Gurr and John A. Evans of this city were awarded the coal contract for all district schools except Kanarra after the school board met Monday and considered all bids. Davis Brothers of Kanarra were chosen for Kanarra school. Elmer Evans’s child Floyd underwent appendicitis surgery but is reported improving.
