Most of the county teachers have signed and returned contracts with only a few extensions requested. The list covers Parowan, Cedar City, and other schools with several personnel shuffles and transfers anticipated to fill vacancies.
Sixty one candidates for graduation from Branch Agricultural College and high school divisions were named this week. College division lists fourteen names and high school lists forty seven. A valedictorian is noted under each group. Mr and Mrs D A Matheson enjoyed a short outing visiting St Georges Park and towns on the east side of the mountains from Kanab to Panguitch through the tunnel.
Scott M Matheson a county attorney and member of the L D S stake presidency will preach the Baccalaureate sermon to graduates of Branch Agricultural College on Sunday evening May 10 announced by Director Oberhansley. The venue was not stated. Clarence Neslen former Salt Lake City mayor will give this year's commencement address on May 15.
Roy T. Cowan 53 a Nephi salesman for Sims Utah Co died at County Hospital Sunday after a highway crash west of town. He suffered skull basil fractures broken chest and ribs and internal injuries from a two turn wreck. Funeral services were at the Stake Tabernacle in Nephi at 2 p m Wednesday. He is survived by his widow and seven children.
A coincidental pairing has Menzies Clark and Dean Mitchell forming the winning duo for B A C. Their younger siblings, a sister and brother, are poised to win Jaurela as Fara Wan high school debaters, highlighting a family tradition in debate success.
Sol Mayer of San Angelo Texas is elected president of the National Wool Marketing Corporation at the Chicago board meeting on April 11 succeeding Roger Gillis of Del Rio Texas Mayer has 40 years in Texas livestock and ranching with about 20000 sheep on 74000 acres and is active in banking serving as director of San Angelo National Bank.
Stake President William R. Palmer and counselor Scott M. Matheson visited Parowan wards last Sunday. They spoke at both sacrament meetings with Matheson in the East Ward and Bigelow in the West Ward. East Ward school and West Ward afternoon meetings featured Palmer, Leigh, Hatch, and Stevens, with musical numbers by Mrs. Earl Decker and Allie Ryan Bayles in West Ward and a mixed quartet in East Ward.
Howard Joseph of Parowan High School won a Swift Essay contest award with a strong essay on meat production and distribution. The state supervisor noted his senior status, FFA presidency, dairy project, and potential valedictorian as reasons for a potential prize.
Parowan High School wins the division finals at Beaver with its negative team of Bart Mitchell and Catherine Clark, coached by Durham Morris, earning a spot in the State meet. The school also notes its strong affirmative team of Ruth Clark and Chlaudfia Joseph who claimed the Southern half championship before Beaver.
Parowan High School student Frank Williamson Jr is to receive 250 baby chicks from Poehlmann Slathery of Petaluma California as a poultry project award. Ray Garner and L Humphreys praise his two to three year effort noting detailed records clean hen house productive hens and good profits. The 950 chicks will arrive early May and he plans to buy 250 more to arrive simultaneously.
A B McGarry of Los Angeles is in town on business today, visiting local offices and meeting potential partners. He is expected to tour several downtown firms and discuss collaborations.
Scott M. Matheson will deliver the commencement address at Parowan High School for the May graduation exercises. Howard Joseph will serve as valedictorian and the music department will provide much of the program.
The first baseball game of the season for Parowan is set for Sunday afternoon at 2:30 on the local diamond with Desert Mound visiting. If West Ward church activities delay, start may move to 3:24. Unclear lineup, but several players have been cut from practice.
East Ward M. I. A. closes season with final conjoint gathering on Sunday evening at 8 P M. A program includes talks by Fao Benson Irene C Mitchell and Randall Adams, musical numbers by the Bee Hive Class Lone Mixed Quartet Ladies Trio and plane solo by Mae Evans, with readings and other remarks.
Amy J. Leigh health supervisor Iron County schools will report on the Utah White House conference on child health and welfare. She will speak to the Relief Society social service department at the Union meeting Sunday afternoon in the West Ward chapel. The talk will be in the Relief room and an invitation is extended to attendees.
Mr and Mrs Gene Lowder returned from Salt Lake City to stay indefinitely. Otto Rasmussen is in Idaho working on an aviation field. Misa Harriet Thornton left for Las Vegas by bus with a job prospect in a drug store where her sister Clara worked. She arranged to receive credit for winter school work. Heber Gurr hosted a birthday party at his home with games and refreshments. Earl Clark visited from New Castle for business and to reconnect with hometown acquaintances.
Several students from here who are attending the B. A. program were home for last weekend. Florence Decker Grace Adama Jean Matheson Dean Mitchell and Georgia Jensen were among them. The leader is nursing a badly injured leg she threw out at the knee recently trying to learn to ski.
Mrs. Harrell Dalton visits Delta this week with relatives from Idaho and possibly California. The city marshal notes the meal she prepared is nearly finished, dishes await washing, and a makeup of red goods is needed before her departure.
In Cedar, the case of Standard Oil Co represented by Jim Stacey against Joe Frampton of Fillmore was decided in favor of the company. R. J. Shay served as plaintiff’s counsel, Grover A. Giles defended for Frampton.
Editor A. LE. Rollo of the Tron County Record traveled to Parowan yesterday on a business visit.
Girl friends of Mrs. Itha Mitchell Mortensen hosted a miscellaneous shower at her parents home Wednesday evening. About forty six friends and relatives attended and gave her many useful presents.
Netlia Mitchell Mortensen and her daughters Mrs Evelyn Han sen and Augusta Bailey, along with two granddaughters, were visitors from Logan staying a few days with the Mitchell family.
Word says Carol Alma Wright is the happy mother of a baby girl born in Ogden last week. Mr and Mrs Frank E Taylor left the first of the week for Las Vegas Nevada where Frank expects to find work.
The Clerk's office issued several licenses this week including William Wayne Stoker of Milford and Leah Blnera Calton of Minersville and the pair Clarence Skougard with Flora Fendleton of Parowan.
About twenty five scouts were led by James C. Robinson and Principal Hatch in a Saturday cleanup at Five-mile camp in the canyon. A. B. Matheson noted the work clearing brush and dead limbs and cited Forest Service improvements making the site ready for public use once weather allows.
The Parowan Stake Bulletin lists meetings and conferences for the near future. Key items include a Stake Union meeting April 26 at 2 30 in Parowan West Ward chapel, and a May 1 2 Boy Scout gathering in Cedar. May 10 24 see Relief Society officer visits, May 17 a primary convention in Cedar, May 17 ward exercises for restoration, and May 30 31 stake quarterly conference in Parowan.
Miss Flora Pendleton daughter of Mr. and Mrs W Clarence Pendleton wed Clarence Skangard in a Saturday evening ceremony officiated by Justice William Bettridge. Both are graduates of Faro Wan High School and well known locally. They plan to reside in the city as friends extend best wishes.
Mrs. John P. Orton is visiting American Fork for a couple of weeks accompanied by her sister Lottie.
