Cedar City and High Schools earned major honors at a delta speech meet. Parowan participants included Orland Evans Carlye Johnson and Darwieson with debaters earning top spots. The team earned judging honors while discussing industry and labor topics, setting up further participation opportunities at the University event on April 16.
Parowan High plans its annual prom with the Serenade Bells theme and Music Makers providing music for dancing. Juniors are praised for decorations and outfits as they showcase a stairway to the stars in a lavish ballroom scene last Friday night.
A Missionary farewell event is held tonight in the West Ward Recreation Hall to honor Lloyd Guy ten, Kendall Gurr, and Mrs. Peter H. The program opens at TM with a reception, followed by a service. The missionaries plan to return to Salt Lake City on Monday aboard a two-week Navajo Zuni trip through Arizona and New Mexico.
City officials warn that several dozen young sidewalk trees are destroyed by fires yearly. Residents are urged to avoid trash or grass fires near trees and to safeguard saplings with wet burlap, wet leaves, or a pipe around trunks. The goal is to preserve shade and the city’s beauty.
The B A C Dramatic Club presents Kiss and Tell at the High School Auditorium on April 14 in the evening. The play has toured Hurricane and Delta with favorable reports. Tickets go on sale at 8:30 a m Tuesday at the High School office with prices 75 cents for adults and 25 cents for students.
Mrs. Anna Stubbs hosted the Young Matrons Variety Club at her home on March 26, guiding members through games and instruction before a luncheon for nine members and a special guest. Miss LuNella Benson marked a birthday with relatives and neighbors, with refreshments prepared by her mother and sister. Mrs. Ethel Bayles celebrated her birthday March 30 with a large gathering and light refreshments. The young set also celebrated birthdays, including John V. Benson, with continued note on page four.
Notice of Iron County Republican County Convention at Court House Parowan for 2 p m on Tuesday April 13 1948. Delegates to the Republican State Convention will be elected and a County Chairman Vice Chairwoman Secretary Treasurer and County Central Committee for the next two years will be chosen. Other party affairs may be considered.
Legion leader Albert E. Adams announces a general committee and sub committees for Parowan race meet on July 15. Saunders M. Clark heads racing, W. Clair Rowley finances, H. C. Parcells advertising, Harrell Dalton amusements, Georgia Stowe paramutual booth, Alma Evans concessions. Legion also backs May 1 school Music Festival with Ches ter Ward Floyd Evans and Alfred E. Adams handling. The Post will join Military Graveside services in Parowan and Paragonah for returning service members. Whit Orion leads the firing squad in Parowan and Dick McBride in Paragonah. families of Earl Hyatt and Dewey Topham await arrival notices and service times.
Little Virginia Mickelson seven year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Jesse Mickelson narrowly escaped serious injury last Saturday night when she ran into the side of a northbound car in front of the High School Building on Main Street. She ran from her parents car parked on the east side toward the Junior Prom, failed to notice the southbound car, and was knocked down. The Nevada licensed vehicle traveling at a moderate speed bruised and scratched her and gave her a shock.
A group of eight Brigham Young University student entertainers performed at Parowan high school on Thursday April 1 under the direction of Oliver R. Smith and Owen Clark. The troupe included dancers Wylie Swapp and Marie Dean Bybee, vocalists Jean Howard Moyle Brown, violinist Dorothy Jeppson, Bob Zabriskie, Berdine Bryan Toole, dramatic reader Rita Clement, with a 14 town southern Utah tour listed.
The BAC Orchestra announces an April 19 concert featuring a full program of concertos with orchestral accompaniment. Professor Roy L. Halverson notes the ensemble’s peak performance year with best string material yet and a goal to showcase soloists from Parowan and nearby towns. Continued on page four.
Estella Eudora Smith Hunter 78, longtime Parowan resident and sister of Ida Lowder and Mae S. Bentley, died in a San Francisco hospital on March 31 after complications from gallstone surgery. She had been ill since March 10 and underwent an operation March 29, while visiting with friend Mary Head in the Bay City. Born November 22, 1869 in Manti, Utah. Elizabeth Camp of the Parowan Daughters of Utah Pioneers will meet April 12 at 8 p.m. at the home of Samuel J. Whitney. lesson by Mrs. Floreen Adams. ladies invited.
Among conference visitors in Salt Lake City for the 118th semi annual LDS gathering are Arnold Gurr of the East Ward Bishopric Bishop and Mrs Leonard Evans of the West Ward and Mrs Elaine Adams of the Primary Stake Board. Rupert Hulet spent days in Wyoming visiting relatives and friends. Karl Topham, son of Mr and Mrs June Topham, a West Side High School junior, visits his grandmother Amelia Topham and relatives during spring break. Alma and Woodruff Holt of Enterprise were in Parowan early this week buying seed barley and seed potatoes and exchanged brief greetings with relatives.
About 42 prospective seminary graduates and instructor Alton Merrill and Mrs Merrill left at 1 am by bus for a three day trip to Northern Utah. They will visit American Fork State Training School Salt Lake City Governor Mansion L D S Church president George Albert Smith State Capitol Bureau of Information Temple Square and more. They plan Chicken Inn dinner Cocoanut Grove ballroom dancing and a Sunday zoo University of Utah This Is The Place monument State Penitentiary Brigham Young University Provo and Sprinville Fish and Game Farm before returning to Parowan.
Mr and Mrs George A Topham of Paragonah learn their son Corporal Dewey A Topham will be returned home for burial. He was captured December 17 1944 in the Battle of the Bulge and died in a French hospital in June after liberation and treatment. He lies in a U S Military Cemetery in Blasville France. His brother Waldo visited him there. Military graveside services with escort planned once shipment arrives after Ogden three day notice.
Community leaders and civic organizations in the region rally to support the May 1 Region 6 Music Festival. About 1000 students are expected. 425 Parowan and Paragond women will prepare meals for four, while Jaycees American Legion and Gun and Red Club join in organizing lunch service. Damages estimated up to $6000 from a separate house fire on East and South streets, destroying the upper story of Mr and Mrs A Clark Orton home. Fire started near the upstairs bathroom. volunteers saved lower areas and furnishings. Fire incident details indicate heat town lunches are a major expense for the festival.
Parowan Jaycees hosted Jaycee clubs from St George Cedar City Panguitch Gunnison Mt Pleasant Fairview Layton Ogden Brigham Canyon and Bountiful at the monthly Travel Trophy Banquet on March 28. Gunnison led out-of-town attendance with 72 earning the Travel Trophy for April. State leaders included Bob Jiman Al Hart Joe Wiscosty Joe Wikcomb Rex Madison. Whit Orton presided as emcee and Karl Mitchell provided entertainment at Taylor's Cafe Brown Derby venue.
All reserve officers and eligible exmen are invited to meet at the Armory in G City on Wednesday April 14 at 7 p.m. to discuss matters of vital importance and get up to date on the current military establishment. Transportation and details available from Lt. Col. A. C. Hatch.
Two baby girls arrived within a week at Ron County Hospital bringing joy to families. Bishop and Mrs Earl O Mitchell and son Clark welcomed Kathleen by cesarean on April 3 weighing 7 pounds 7 ounces, mother and baby reported fine. Budd and Mrs Munford along with three sons welcomed a girl born March 29, mother and baby at home and well.
A boy was born March 27 at the County Hospital to Mr and Mrs Chester Hatch. He is their first child and the first grandchild for both families bearing the Hatch surname.
