Col Chas W Thatcher arrived in the county Friday with a covered wagon, a team, a burro, and a mule. He held meetings through Tuesday to drum up support for the highway project along the Paris to Faro route. The worn outfit displayed old souvenirs and license plates from many states.
Bear Lake County schools earned top honors in a health program judging period. State department consideration highlighted countywide supervision and exemplary work across twelve and twenty four week periods.
Létha D. Maddon urges district staff and parents to assist in reaching a higher standard this year. She stresses coordinated effort across schools and communities to improve student outcomes and meet target goals.
Governor Jons Moore announced the Republican campaign plan for a statewide tour starting Tuesday September 23. Hailey, as secretary of the Republican state central committee, said Moore would visit key cities including American Falls Preston and Malad with stops through Friday September 26.
Heavy snow prompted a traveler to remark on wintering mules along the Washington Hiway the route from Washington D C to Portland via Chicago and Seattle. The speaker cited the four color markers and predicted the new highway would open next year cutting Portland Chicago distance by 300 miles while tracing the Oregon trail through Preston Emigration canyon Paris Garden City Bear Lake Sage Wyoming Kemmerer Green River to the trail. Col Thatcher spoke at Lanark and Paris sharing his Washington Hiway work and offered comic impersonations.
The Bloomington school house has been repainted after years of wear and now undergoes a thorough cleaning. Arthur Taylor of this city led the repainting and work has begun to repipe the building replacing old defective material with new pipes.
D P Pratt construction engineer for Utah Idaho Sugar Company visited Bear Lake county to arrange two portable beet dumps to be built at Paris and Wardboro. The plan calls for these to be replaced in about a year or 30 by mechanical dumps as tonnage grows.
Edward Austin a former rancher from Indian Creek near Bear Lake motored here last week from southern California where he has been with his family for the summer. He told the Post that he would return to California after attending to business matters.
A Utah rail construction crew reported an injured foot on Wednesday while working with equipment on the site. The incident involved crew member LaMont Passey, who sustained the foot injury during standard roadbed duties.
Threshing season starts as farmers work to bring in grain. The Hoge machine operated this week north of Paris at Gobel Bros George Hoge and William Brucks farms with other outfits threshing south of Paris.
Harvey Glick and Art Shepherd, managers of the Mt Sherman Lumber Mill, left Monday for California seeking work as the mill remains temporarily closed.
A stork visit brings a newborn to Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Morgan of Liberty last Saturday. Mother and child are doing well, while hope remains for the father.
Mrs. William Painter aged 77 of Bloomington suffered a two paralyptic stroke the latter part of last week while visiting her sons in Diamondville Wyoming. She is in a pitiful condition and does not recognize anyone.
Directors met on September 8 and declared the regular quarterly dividend payable October 1 on the 7 per cent preferred stock. This is the forty seventh consecutive dividend on the preferred stock distributed to about 9200 stockholders. The territory served includes Utah, Southern Idaho, Western Colorado, and Evanston Wyoming with most stockholders in the area and the rest nationwide and abroad.

H W Wves Jung representing the San Diez 51 it and Produce Co spent days in McCammon noting several local farmers signed up for next year. More than 50 acres already pledged and with 150 acres assured the company will provide seed free and pay farmers 30 dollars per acre for peas. The firm will manage crop care irrigation and harvesting, employing 18 to 84 year olds to earn 2.50 to 3.00 dollars daily for thirty days. A pea cannery may follow if the plan succeeds and more acreage is signed. The rep plans to return later in the week to recruit additional growers.
A Calumet, Michigan resident, after spending the past 18 months in Idaho working at a phosphate mine, left this morning to return home. The traveler, identified by GOES and Goulette initials, concluded a long summer stay away from Calumet.
A brief visit by Logan Barrett of Montpelier to the Mose Lewis Store is mentioned. He returned home Thursday amid remarks on roadway conditions through Logan Canyon and Meyers, with praise from local contacts.
The Idaho Supreme Court upholds Noah Arnold alias Robert Ford's death sentence for the Witla Crisp murder at Hope Idaho in 1923 and denies rehearing on his appeal. David Hand's bid to delay execution for the slaying of William Patterson is also turned down. A rehearing will be sought. if denied, Governor Moore or the pardon board may act in October. Meanwhile Hoagland could be hanged as Judge Varian prepares to resentence him.
Boise reporting two new lawyers admitted to practice in Idaho include Don Haddock of Paris who is blind. His brother read questions while Haddock used a typewriter with touch typing to answer. A separate note mentions injuries from a premature explosion but not the bar outcome.
A retired Illinois lawyer and Wixom family historian, Justin H. Wixom, is visiting Paris en route to California for the Wixom reunion at the Newhouse Hotel in Lake Geneva. He notes Wixom family branches and roots dating to 1630 Massachusetts and praises the family’s farming heritage and genealogical work led by Mrs Jornel Mead Bagley of Minneapolis.
Funeral services were held Saturday in Brigham City Utah for Mrs Agnes Southworth 77 who died suddenly at home. Interment followed in Brigham City cemetery. Born in Glasgow Scotland February 22 1847 she lived much of her life in Utah and California. She is survived by numerous children grandchildren and great grandchildren and many relatives attended from Bear Lake and surrounding areas.
Louis Schier narrowly escaped injury when his velocipede was struck at the intersection of South Ninth and Washington streets. He heard a horn from a driver but misjudged it, his vehicle wrecked yet he remained uninjured as the car traveled slowly.
Mrs Emma Thornock of Bloomington visits Bancroft on Tuesday to be at the bedside of her daughter Mrs Quiver Jacobson who has been ill since the death of her son Carl while on missionary work in New Zealand.

County Treasurer Amy Munk and Miss Nellie Pearce from Brennan Davis Mercantile enjoy a Florida vacation. Miss Munk has kept her post at the courthouse for the past two years without leave, earning this short break.

A Saturday morning crash near a canyon road left Mrs. Caronia with a broken arm after the car ran off the road. Mr. Caronia, from Salt Lake, was with her and they were taken to Dr Moore’s Emergency Hospital for treatment.
