Swainson's Hawks Move South From New York Fields
As ground squirrels enter hibernation and grasshoppers dwindle, large Swainson's hawks migrate in great flocks toward Argentina. A single hawk may digest up to 200 grasshoppers per meal, aiding pest control along roadside perches as the birds travel south for winter. Some hawks perish or are shot, reducing agricultural help.
