Idaho Reserves Aid Southern Idaho Farmers In Crisis

Southern Idaho counties saw Volunteer Reserves and state highway crews rushed to aid farmers as torrential rains and freezing temps threatened crops near Twin Falls. The effort involved A J Tillman and Gen M G McConnel with state officials coordinating relief and labor. A new source of revenue began November 1 through a gasoline tax on federally supplied fuel, while Idaho shipped prize potatoes to Nebraska after losing a Third War Loan bet.

Price admin faces personnel questions over cattle pricing

A June amendment in the appropriation bill would require top OPA officials to have five years in the relevant business, but the Senate modified it to avoid firing inexperienced staff. At an October 26 hearing on cattle price controls, four OPA witnesses admitted no real experience in beef cattle production or meat distribution. Dr Richard B Gilbert defended his economics credentials. The hearing spotlighted a push to reform agency leadership amid questions of practical, not just theoretical, policy experience. The panel noted the cattle price ruling appeared only as the OPA faced court challenges to its prior controls.
