EZRA J. POULSEN recalls Miss Naomi Rich, formerly of Paris and now a BYU librarian, entertaining a Bear Lake group with color slides from Europe. The piece muses on travel, observation, and the joy and limits of exploring distant lands through pictures and stories.
The Daughters of Utah Pioneers met at Grace Smedley's home with Captain Théressa Rich leading a history reading of Charles LeVant Rode and Thomas W. Horsley. Iris Collings gave the lesson In Their Footsteps while Rodney Bergholm played piano and a girls trio sang. Refreshments for 18 members and visitors followed. hostesses were Rich Smedley Collings Smart. This was the last regular meeting until fall.
Adults 18 and over are invited to enroll in a 10 week driver training course at B L Airport. Students should send application blanks to Ralph Roghaar. Parental participation is not required. a lack of parental help does not bar a child from joining.
Elder A Theodore Tuttle addressed both sessions of the Bear Lake Stake quarterly conference at the Paris tabernacle urging members to live righteously and accept the cost of blessings. Local leaders including President L Burdette Pugmire, Stake Patriarch Bryan Booth, and others spoke. BYU students and returning missionaries shared experiences. music was provided by the Stake choir.

About 15 Bear Lake Junior Chamber of Commerce members painted Mrs. Thomas Sleight’s Main Street home in Paris last Saturday. The project was led by Karel Thomas and aimed at a community good deed.
Mr and Mrs Maurice Beck of Ovid announce the engagement of their daughter Anita to Lorin Brent Weston son of Mr and Mrs Lorin Weston of Laketown Weston is a Utah State University student in Logan and Anita recently graduated from Fielding High School No wedding plans have been made as both begin studies next fall at state university
Veteran Idaho legislator and Paris native today declared his intention to seek election to his fifth consecutive term in the U S House of Representatives.
The 1958 Highway Act signed April 16 aims to speed nationwide road building. Idaho Auto Mobile association notes a $400 million emergency fund for ABC roads with one third state funding and two thirds federal, about $8.9 million of which will go to Idaho. Projects must start and finish by December 1, 1959. An extra $115 million may be loaned to states facing matching shortfalls. For fiscal 1959 Interstate funding rises by $200 million to $2.2 billion, with about $2 million to Idaho.
Acreage reporters will visit Bear Lake county farms to verify compliance with wheat acreage allotments and soil bank contracts. Farmers must review the report before signing to ensure accuracy and inclusion of all crop acreages. Violations trigger notices, with disposal by August 1 and a second inspection after the deadline.

Over 200 enroll in the annual Red Cross course at Bear Lake Hot Springs from May 26 to June 6. Beginners split into smaller groups for five day sessions, with adult classes daily and optional daily lessons for advanced swimmers. Schedule lists time slots for Fish Haven to Ovid and Libery areas, with adult time blocks and a note on liability insurance for drivers.
Five hundred cattlemen and their wives will converge on Jackson Wyoming June 5 and 6 for the 86th annual Wyoming Stock Growers association convention. A rancher information program has been prepared and will feature Governor Milward Simpson among speakers.
Karel Thomas of Bloomington filed his petition this morning for Bear Lake County assessor. A lifelong resident, farmer, property owner, and taxpayer, he cites office experience and farming knowledge. He attended Fielding High School and Weber College, married Nada Jean Dunn, and resides on a Bloomington ranch with three children.
New Rich Motel on Main Street in Paris opens this spring owned and operated by Ralph Rich. The seven unit modern facility features wall to wall carpeting and a neon sign. Landscaping is complete and preparations are ready for summer tourist traffic with openings planned this coming weekend.
Completion certificates for vocational courses in the school of trade and industrial education at Idaho State College in Pocatello will be awarded June 2 to 180 students. Twelve completed in January and 168 finish this month. Included from this area are Gilbert Parker of Paris and Ivan Sloicht of Liberty, both airplane mechanics.
National Park Service reports 59 million visits in 1957, an 8 percent rise from 1956, exceeding Mission 66 projections. Idaho tourism notes record park travel as plans for 80 million annual visitors by 1966 advance with about 900 million dollars in expenditures.
Spencer Rich Jr. sustained a skull fracture and a broken nose after his bicycle collided with a car driven by Joan Hymas at the Main to Center street intersection in Paris. Deputy Sheriff George Ramey investigated and helped move the boy to his father's office. he is recovering rapidly per Dr. Rich.
Ezra C. Budge of Paris has been granted membership in Phi Kappa Phi at Utah State University Logan. The honor recognizes top ten percent graduates and high achieving juniors showing promise for continued scholarship.
In Zone 2 Siver Nielson of Ovid is elected trustee with 120 votes, while Marriner Jensen wins Zone 4 with 178 to 165 over Alvin Teuscher. The Five Mill tax levy passes county wide by 544 to 165. Nielson had no opposition. Jensen leads in Montpelier with broad support outside the city.
L. W. Bach of Monterey Park California, a Paris Bear Lake area pioneer in phosphate mining, tours the community with wife and the Grandys of Los Angeles. They visited Soda Springs and Pocatello to tend mining business and dined with Mrs Leo Bunderson in Paris canyon.
Mrs Don Erickson of Fish Haven announces the engagement of her daughter Annette to Sterling R Wallen son of Mr and Mrs L C Wallentine of Paris The wedding date remains indefinite.
