The Ten Day Council held its annual meeting and recognition dinner in Pocatello on May 3. National Council’s Silver Beaver awards for distinguished service to youth were presented to C. Ardell Smiley and Ezra Hawkes of Pocatello and LaMar Elison of Blackfoot, with Elbert R. Curtis of Salt Lake as speaker.
Funeral services were conducted Monday in the St Charles ward chapel for Bert Bunderson 66 who died April 30 in Bear Lake Memorial hospital after a weeks long illness. Bishop Lovell Booth officiated with multiple speakers and hymns. He was a lifelong St Charles resident active in LDS church and local livestock farming. Surviving are his widow Almira Findlay three children D Orr Elza Bunderson and Veda Weeks, plus eight sisters and ten grandchildren.
H. Max Hanson of Fairfield a Democrat seeking Idaho governor's seat visited Paris on Wednesday. Hanson a five term state legislator and World War II veteran is a University of Idaho graduate now engaged in farming.
The marriage of Miss Lois Minnig of Noonan and Dean Peterson of Ovid was solemnized at Bishop Frank Hirschi’s home on Tuesday April 29. On the same day the bride’s brother and his wife welcomed an eight pound son in Wayne Michigan.
Idaho State Wheat Growers Association reports local meetings in Bear Lake Caribou Oneida and Washington counties. J A Pat Walker serves as temporary chairman for Bear Lake. The organization has 24 counties organized with Lewiston as main office. State officers are C E Gabby president Hal Edwards vice president and Bob Wittman secretary treasurer.
The mayor and Paris City Council designate next Saturday May 10 as Spring Clean Up Day. J Vivian Nye leads crews with trucks road grader and volunteers to clear Main Street and other streets. The city offers free haul away of winter rubbish. residents should place junk in front of homes in containers that will not be returned.
The Paris Chapter of the American Red Cross calls a meeting at Emerson school this Thursday evening May 8 at 8 PM to plan the annual swimming course. Landon R. Pugmire, chairman, urges a parent or representative from each community to attend to arrange transportation and discuss class setups.
A May Day rug fair will be held at Bear Lake Motor show room in Montpelier on Friday May 9 starting at 1 30 p m. Women from Bear Lake county will exhibit and demonstrate hand made rugs for visitors as part of National Home Demonstration week led by Marlene Stegelmeier.
A Freeman Magazine feature outlines long running land claims by Native tribes, from 1881 onward, seeking billions in compensation. Tribes like Choctaw, Quapaw, Sioux, Ottawa and Creek sues cover vast areas including Chicago and California, with claims tied to leases and lost lands.
The 60th annual Fielding High School commencement will be held May 22 at 8 p.m. in the Bear Lake Stake tabernacle. Ebert Hymes of Utah State University will speak. LaNene Hirschi is valedictorian and Henry Robert Stocker is salutatorian. 27 seniors are listed with names such as Mary Armatage and Dallas Gilbert Athay among the class.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 pm in Ogden for Glen L Norton 63 who died Monday after being struck by a car while crossing Monroe Blvd. He was known in Bear Lake and once ran a bottling works in Paris. Surviving are his father William Norton of Ogden and brother J Earl Norton of Preston.
Miss Flora Lewis daughter of Mr and Mrs Ray Lewis Paria Utah united in marriage with Reed Bird of Dingle in a double ring Logan Temple ceremony Friday May 1 officiated by President Darley. After a wedding dinner at a Logan cafe a 14 member wedding party celebrated. They will honeymoon in Oregon and the West Coast and reside in Dingle. A reception will be held at the Paris Second Ward hall Saturday night.
Last Friday Fielding Chapter FFA members traveled by bus to Logan for contest judging. The Fielding seniors joined in Dairy Products Poultry Meats Farm Mechanics Dairy Livestock and Livestock events with teams led by Grant Morgan Glade Hymns Richard Ward and others. Final results had not yet been announced when the text was written.
The fourth annual Bear Lake Soil Conservation Assembly was held May 2 in Montpelier High School. Students from grades 6 to 8 across Bear Lake county exhibited 263 conservation posters. Awards honored students from Georgetown Emerson Dingle Central Lincoln Pegram and other schools with first to honorable mentions.
The 886th Chemical Company from Bear Lake valley will join national Army units to celebrate Armed Forces week. An open house is planned at the Wardboro chapel on Thursday May 15 at 8 p.m. The public is invited to attend the program and displays with a special staff from the Idaho Military District to inspect the unit.
The 1958 Paris Chapter Red Cross drive closed with a total $801 raised toward a $600 goal. Funds came from Fish Haven, St. Charles, Bloomington and Paris wards plus Ovid Lanark Liberty Sharon and other communities. Sharp Matthews chaired assisted by Margaret Passey and local captains Wanda Stock Jimmij ington Arden Sondteevas Van Nelson Worth Eborn Charles Parker Archie Parker Norman Roberts.
Mr and Mrs John Johnston and Ea Thomas Johnston depart for a three week vacation to visit their son William Johnston in Pittsburgh and attend the Bog Scout convention in Chicago. They will pick up a new car in Kenosha Wisconsin then travel north to Montana to visit relatives in Dillon before returning. Mr Johnston is superintendent at Camp Lifton and a National Council of Boy Scouts member.
A Bear Lake county home demonstration agent announces a Montpelier city hall meeting on Thursday May 8 at 8 pm. Miss Peggy Arnell a St Charles hair stylist will discuss hair styling adapted to individuals and show models. The event is open to Bear Lake valley women and the public.
Trustees of Class A School District No. 88 in Montpelier reviewed the operating budget for 1958 59 projecting revenue of 518 010 67 and district expenditures in various departments. They also debated school bus trips, a proposed elementary school site purchase, bond election eligibility, and a vote integrity committee to audit absentee ballots.
