Montpelier FFA wins the eastern Idaho district public airing and parliamentary program with the Life Blood of America entry. Fielding FFA places second. Richard Ward Glade Hymas Vernon Park Dennis Parker Rex Law led the Fielding team. New officers are being seated as the chapter plans to attend the state contest in Boise March 26.
The annual deer trend count for the St. Charles area of Bear Lake county was conducted March 6 by Conservation Officer Delvan D. Hibbert with Rangers Vaughn Tippets Bill Nye and Floyd Lewis. The total deer count reached 948 across Green Canyon 168 St. Charles Big Creek 446 St. Charles Dry Creek 210 Worm Creek 124. Three deer were found dead. Sno-cat counting yielded a consistent trend count but fewer deer than foot counters. Deer appeared in good condition though range was poor with highlining browse plants. Counts by year and method show 1964 680 1965 714 1966 835 1967 1236 1968 948 with sno-cat used in all but 1955 and 1958.

An invitation to all dairymen in Bear Lake valley to attend the Cache Valley Breeders association annual meeting on Thursday March 20 at Hyde Park Utah. Program starts at 10 30 in the morning with a noon lunch in the Hyde Park recreation hall.
Union Pacific announces a faster freight service to Pacific coast points. A Fifth morning delivery of all freight traffic from Chicago will begin this week, announced by Arthur E. Stoddard, UP president. The stepped-up schedule, run with connecting lines, takes effect with departures from Chicago on March 12.
Idaho taxpayers still bear the largest tax load with the federal share dropping from 63 percent in 1946 to 57 percent in 1957 while the state share rose from 17 to 23 percent. The Idaho Tax Bulletin notes total direct Idaho taxation rose to 239.9 million dollars in 1967, up 8.39 percent from 1956 and over twice the 1946 figure, with 94 percent of federal revenue from income tax.
The Bear Lake Valley Dairymen's Cooperative Association plans its regular annual meeting at Fielding High School Paris next Saturday March 15. Prof Edward C Larsen of Weber College and Utah state legislator will be the principal speaker. A luncheon is provided at noon followed by the members meeting.
Bertrand Heber Nelson a retired farmer and sheeprman who lived in Bloomington for years died Monday March 10 in Ogden. Services set for Friday March 14 at 1 PM in Lewiston Utah L D S chapel with burial in Lewiston. He born June 2 1893 in Bryce Arizona was married to Lazell Leavitt Nelson since May 15 1914 and survived by seven children a brother and four sisters among others.
The Society will hold its annual dinner party tomorrow night at the Second Ward chapel. Dinner is served at 7 30 p m followed by an entertaining program. All married ward residents are invited to attend this annual event.
Iota Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma held a no host luncheon at Mrs. Rita Gorton’s Soda Springs home on March 8 to honor pioneer and retired teachers. Program chair Gertrude Freeman led the event with arrangements by Ruby Sorenson. Special guests Blanche Whitman Rose Torgenson Ida Stone and Ella Hull shared early teaching memories.
The Paris Lions Club tournament begins Saturday evening at Fielding High School with six 6:45 to 8:30 PM games. Twelve teams from southeastern Idaho western Wyoming and northern Utah compete under 1968 Gold Medal rules with trophies and medals for top teams and players.
Mrs. Vinnie Price owner and manager says the Novelty theater will reopen early in April with its usual line of pictures. The Paris venue has been closed for winter while Price attended business in Ogden. Booking continues this week for the contemplated reopening.
Idaho 4-H clubs prepare for the National 4-H shearing contest debut in 1958 with Washington state and Chicago championships. Four youths aged 14 to 21 will study under Ed Warner of Chicago at schools in Moscow Caldwell and Aberdeen, with Robert Kerns handling registrations for non 4-H farm youths.
Taft P. Budge, acting Paris postmaster for three years, had his name sent to the Senate by President Eisenhower for confirmation. Idaho congressman Budge joked the nominee is one of his cousins, but doubts ties to former President Taft or Senator Taft. Budge began as acting postmaster December 18, 1954 after Lloyd Passey’s resignation.
Governor Robert E. Smylie declares March 10 to 17, 1958 as American Legion Birthday Week in Idaho. The proclamation honors the Legion’s 39 years of service to God and Country and its efforts in youth training, welfare, and community service while warning against un-American activities.
The Rainbow Rod and Gun Club will hold its regular monthly meeting at the club cabin in Montpelier canyon on Monday evening March 17 at 8 p m. George Simmons of Montpelier president announces the Bear Lake area club has about 1200 members and plans many events including an April 11 dance that last year drew well over 1200 attendees.
The Bear Lake Stake quarterly conference filled the Bear Lake Tabernacle in Paris last weekend with Bishop Thorpe B. Isaacson and Elder Arden O. Clark of Salt Lake City among the featured speakers. Speakers urged respect for parents, proper storage for emergencies, and living the gospel. many congregation members participated in brief remarks.
The Bear Lake Rangers held a special meeting on March 10 at Fenton Allred’s home to elect officers. Rex Mattson was reelected president, Eldon Webb reelected secretary, Fenton Allred elected vice president, and directors named Eldon Lewis Weynh Bird Mattson and Webb as holdovers. A captain and lieutenant will be chosen later.
