The Deseret News recounts Ensign Ferd Jaussi of Paris Idaho describing the action of Lt Elwin Petersen of Newton Utah and crew in a WWII bombing run against a Japanese freighter near Tokyo. Petersen survived severe wounds after a shell disabled the aircraft and guided a 1,000 mile return flight with Jaussi assisting aboard.
The PTA reschedules its monthly meeting to Wednesday March 7 due to a Relief Society party on March 14. The program includes Emerson band selections, readings by Amos Hulme, a St Charles addressing La Vell Ward, and a St Charles musical number. All parents and residents are invited.
The US Fish and Wildlife Service released a 1941 census showing Idaho with about 243000 big game animals. Major species totals include mule deer 138000 whitetail 28000 elk 37800 moose 1100 antelope 17000 Rocky Mountain sheep 3000 mountain goat 5000 black bear 12400 and grizzly bear 46. The state notes a drop in mountain sheep since then and a 2200 count. Elk and other species remain similar to 1944 estimates with an 18 percent rise from the prior era. Idaho ranks among leading states for several species and trails Wyoming in elk numbers.
Mr Petersen guided the plane in a flawless landing despite being blinded in one eye and in pain. He directed Martin to attend the crew while the co-pilot seat was filled. The crew noted the arrival of Lt. Jaussi on furlough and Ford’s recent promotion to Lieutenant from Ensign.
Mrs Carrie Passey who has lived with her daughter Mrs Brudette Pugmire and family in St Charles was visiting in Paris Saturday.
Mrs Charlies Wyler aged 68 died at her Paris Idaho home Wednesday morning after long illness. Born in Switzerland she came to the U S as a child and lived in Paris since. Surviving are six daughters Mrs Bolton Paris Mrs Sorenson Richfield Idaho Mrs Roberts Pocatello Mrs Burton Montpelier Mrs Sparks Montpelier Mrs Hayes Georgetown two sons Rulon and Charles Wyler Paris one sister Mrs Martha Olsen California two brothers Robert Johnley Montpelier Ernest Johnley Nevada funeral arrangements were incomplete Wednesday afternoon.
Pvt Earl Grimmett of the 5th Army in Italy writes to his parents about entertaining troops. He describes the band with six saxes, three trumpets, two trombones, four rhythm players, and plans to expand to more trumpets and trombones. The unit performs in Italian theatres or in the field and is developing a show built around music and dance designed to boost morale.
ARM 3/c Hugh Crae Wilson of a Pacific bombing squadron has a five day leave to bring his wife to Salt Lake City then return to duty. He flies a Privateer PB4Y-2, a newly revealed Navy bomber. His brother F Guy Wilson and Gary rushed him to Bear Lake Hot Springs in St Charles to visit parents Dr. and Mrs. W A Wilson. The couple’s other sons, James Vance and Byron Kent, are also in service with James overseas in France and Byron training at a hospital corps school.
Mr and Mrs Fanton Allred entertained coach and Mrs Willmore and the basketball team at a delicious supper Friday night after the game with Affon. Attendees included Coach and Mrs Willmore, Manager Bill Matthews, Charles Hulme, Robert Parker, Gens Passey, Fred Lewis, Curtis Austin, Dale Sorenson, Sharp Matthews, George Hulme, Kay Allred and Verna Allred.
New red and blue stamps become valid in March and extend to late spring. Several existing stamps remain valid through various dates, including sugar and SHOH stamps with long validity, plus A-14 gasoline coupons lasting four gallons until March 21.
Veterans are urged to seek work to aid the war effort and conserve readjustment allowances under the G I Bill. They have two years after discharge to draw benefits, with weekly entitlements affected by earnings. self employment reduces entitlements by five weeks per month. Applications should be filed with the Unemployment Compensation Division Boise or local U S Employment Service offices.
The two Paris Wards join for the annual Gold and Green Ball this Friday night. The Sharon orchestra provides the music for the event.
The annual Old Folks party for Paris wards was held February 21 with a picture show at Novelty theatre and a hot chicken dinner for about 100 guests aged 60 to 84. Prizes honored long marriages and ages, decorations matched Washington’s birthday, and a plate lunch aided ill and homebound guests.
A Bear Lake Stake Juniors and Explorers party was held Saturday evening February 24 at the St Charles ward recreation hall. Stake officers Cleneth Arnell Darlene Booth and Jean Hart directed. Arnell led social mixer games followed by a buffet luncheon. Seventy eight juniors and explorers and fifty stake and ward officers attended enjoying dancing and high spirits.
Mr and Mrs W E Poulsen report their father broke his hip after slipping on an icy street Tuesday last week. He was en route to Bushnell and rushed to Bushnell hospital where he remains hospitalized for at least four months. Friends wish him a speedy recovery.
Prof H B Hunsaker, Utah State Agricultural College faculty since 1937, was named head of USAC physical education by the board of trustees. A 1930 USAC honors graduate, master’s from Oregon 1938, he coached Fielding High and directed Logan gym. he is pursuing doctorates at Cal and Washington and coauthoring a PE book with Prof Yocom.
Mr Iri C Nye donates items for a public benefit sale at the Irl Nye Mill Yard Liberty on March 8 including milk cart lumber hog troughs and more. Palmer Tueller travels to Lava Hot Springs for rheumatism treatments.
Thomas Abraham Clayton died at his Paris Idaho home Monday morning from a heart ailment. Born January 19 1862 in Salt Lake City he helped settle Bear Lake Valley and directed the Paris Dramatic Association. Survived by widow Annie Jane Pendrey eight children nine grandchildren and three sisters and brothers funeral set for 2 pm Thursday in the Paris Second Ward chapel.
A Pocatello Social Security Office official urges caution against using social security cards as identity proof. The card only identifies the social security account for wage credits toward old age and survivors benefits, and the board requires additional identity evidence when paying benefits.
