Idaho Plans to Greet Phos Committee Arrival in Pocatello

Pocatello Idaho June 17. Advised that congress approved a committee investigation of phosphate deposits in the intermountain states. Hugh D. Mac Cosham of the state planning board said arrangements would move quickly. The federal study aims to develop a program for Idaho Utah and Wyoming with federal support. Idaho hosts expect to prep for the meeting and confer with Senator Pope on his return from Washington.

Keetch Reunion at St Charles to Meet in June

The Keetch reunion gathered at St Charles Amusement Hall on June 15 with 212 attendees. Matthew Pugmire chaired the day after being elected at the Preston meeting. the program included prayer and a vocal duet by Oreta and Ione Rich.

Emil Vaterlaus of Cowley Dies of Pneumonia

Emil Vaterlaus a Cowley resident and former Bear Laker died last week from pneumonia. He founded The Star Valley Pioneer and later The Star Valley Independent with his brother Conrad, publishing from 1901 for years before selling out. He edited the Cowley Progress for many years before turning it over to his son. He will be remembered by valley residents.

Monte Cristo Road Reopens to Traffic in Utah County

Randolph Utah County road supervisor Melvin Kennedy reports Monte Cristo road from Woodruff to reopen to traffic in good condition. The reopening ends a period of disruption with travelers now able to use the route.

Giant Grizzly Killed in Jackson Hole Area

A gigantic grizzly killed in the Polecat Creek district near Jackson Hole by C Craven Construction Co superintendent. The bear measured 97 inches nose to tail with 3 inch claws and 11 by 6 inch front paw. Skull 16 by 9 inches, sent to the American Museum of Natural History for recording, surpassing previous local records.

Capacity of Cokeville Fish Hatchery Expanded

A. W. Stock, superintendent of the Cokeville State Fish Hatchery, announced enlargement by four new metal fish troughs increasing yearly production to 150,000 young fish. He reported gathering 660,000 eggs at 19 cents per thousand, with market price about $1 per thousand. Lake Alice to open to fishing July 1.

Forest Fire Fighting Drill By Cache National Forest Guards

On June 16 guards and regular personnel from the Paris and Preston districts gathered for an annual guard present training session in forest fire control. Forester Hann praised the exercises which covered major fire suppression phases and included an imaginary blaze to demonstrate proper and improper handling.

Hart Family Reunion Held in Salt Lake City

Descendants of James H. Hart, late Bear Lake Stake president, gathered in Salt Lake City on June 21 for a family reunion on his birthday. Attending were Arthur W. Hant preston and Eugene Hart of Bloomington, representing their branches. The Hartolian editorial issues were discussed.

Forest fire season nears in Paris ranger district

Forester Jay B Hann warns that warmer weather and less snow will dry forests and raise fire risk. Per district plan, designated per diem fire guards in each community will receive tools and equipment for rapid response and will be identified by their fire tool boxes. The Forest Service thanks the guards for their cooperation.

Sagehen Shooting Ban Extended in Idaho for 1938

Idaho Game Warden W R McIntyre announced a continued sagehen hunting ban in Idaho counties for the 1938 season. A two year closed season will be studied to decide if lifting the ban in 1939. He cited reports of more sage hens this year and credited the previous ban with aiding population recovery.

Students urged to obtain Social Security numbers for work

Poc atello Field Office of the Social Security Board reminded students entering summer commercial and industrial employment to secure an account number. Employers must report wages with the employee’s account number to federal authorities, contributing to old age insurance credits. About 1.36 million high school graduates and 136 thousand college graduates are expected to seek summer jobs or teach during vacations.

Red Cross Offers Home Hygiene Teacher Training at UCLA

Graduate nurses will form the student body for a Red Cross Teachers Training course for home hygiene and sick care at the University of California at Los Angeles from June 25 to August 5. Miss Lucy Brinkerhoff will direct, with Miss Katherine Forsythe as assistant, providing practical supervision as instructors learn to teach others. West Phosphate Now Studied by Committee

A congressional joint committee on phosphates met in Washington and named Senator Pope of Idaho as chair. Preliminary hearings begin Saturday with plans for extensive sessions in Pocatello on July 15 and in Florida in the fall. The panel aims to map U S phosphate resources and development for agriculture and military use and to propose a national policy, including public ownership. They will also study power options from Grand Coulee and Bonneville dams for Idaho plants and the feasibility of transmitting power to phosphate fields.

Former Paris Woman Selina Passey Thornock Dies at 69

Mrs Selina Passey Thornock 69 widow of John Henry Thornock died Monday at Paris then moved to Idaho Falls 17 years ago. She was active in L D S Relief Society Genealogical Society and War Mothers. Survived by six children two brothers a sister and 22 grandchildren. Funeral today at 2 p m in L D S Second Ward Church. Interment Rose Hill Cemetery. Wood Mortuary directs.

Lost Boy Found After Montpelier Idaho Search

Randolph Utah and Mrs Clarence Perkins rejoiced as La Mar Perkins, who wandered off to visit an uncle, was located after extensive Monday searches. Loran Jackson encountered the boy en route to Montpelier and delivered him to his destination with parental consent. Mr and Mrs James Dunford traveled to Provo Utah for the Danford family reunion at Aspengrove.
