Ammunition Workers Turn Out Vast Postwar Quantities
During the first year of war American ammunition plants produced enough rifle and machine gun rounds to potentially threaten each Axis soldier with 83 bullets. At one arsenal the average worker made over 47 000 small rounds, 605 artillery cases, 200 time fuses, and 400 shell bodies up to six inches. If only those directly in manufacturing were counted, per capita output would rise by about 20 percent. In 1942 the facility shipped over a billion small rounds and more than ten million artillery shell cases.
