Fielding FFA hosted the Southeastern Idaho Public Speaking contest with contestants from Malad Preston Grace and Paris. Gordon Vaughan of Malad won first with Ace Waldron second. Fielding’s Max Vallentine and Gene Findlay excelled in speeches on electricity on the farm and post war agricultural production. Judges were Melinda Sparks Willard Kunz and George Nelson. State finals in Boise March 27-29 will include the district winner and 12 other qualifiers.

Idaho Veterans Draw 429 077 in Compensation During January
Unemployed and self employed Idaho veterans received 429 077 in GI Bill benefits in January 1947. Unemployed veterans got 314 552, the largest monthly amount in their history, while self employed veterans received 214 524. Officials linked the jump to more veterans being discharged in 1946 and mid winter shutdowns in seasonal industries. Payments to unemployed veterans continued to rise in early February.

Irene Robinson daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph Robinson of Saltown Utah married Alma C Johnson son of Mr and Mrs Alma J Johnson of Benjamin Utah in the Salt Lake Temple Thursday February 20 at 1130 am. A wedding breakfast for close families followed at the bride’s sister Mrs R W Elggren home and a reception that evening at Mr and Mrs Orvald Fox home. Former Bloomington Man Dies at Idaho Falls
Seymour Hyrum Thornock aged 56 of Idaho Falls died of heart disease Saturday night while at a dance in the Idaho Falls tabernacle. Born October 26, 1890 in Bloomington, he worked with Purina Feed Company for 15 years, had been based in Idaho Falls for 10 years, and lived in Rigby previously. He married May 24, 1913 in Paris, Idaho. Survived by widow Janet Thornock and seven children, along with a sister and brother, and 11 grandchildren.
