St Charles Old Folks Party Scheduled Feb 9

The St Charles annual Old Folks party will be held Saturday February 9 in the ward hall. A hot dinner is served at 1 30 p.m. followed by a program. Supper at 6 30 p.m. then a one act play program and dancing. All former residents are invited to attend.

Nikki Monson Makes Honor Roll at University of Utah

Nikki Monson, daughter of Mr and Mrs O E Monson of St Charles, a freshman at the University of Utah, earned a spot on the honor roll for the past quarter. She joined a Preston student as the only members of a special group to make the list among about 530 honorees from 10 000 enrolled. Her average was 3 7 on a 4 0 scale.

Gen. Geo. W. Warren II outlines chairmanships on the Senate Industry and Labor Committee and service on Finance Insurance Printing and Legislative Expense committees. County Budget Hearing Set for Feb 11 at Courthouse Paris

The public hearing on the proposed 1957 County Budget will be at 10 a.m. Monday Feb 11 in the Paris courthouse. Auditor Sam V Tunks says items may be lowered but not raised. grand total is $214,120.00 with $197,489.00 shown for some totals. Departments may not spend more than budgeted.

Church Bill Opens Insurance Door for WWII Korean War Vets

Senator Frank Church with Senator Russell Long announced a bill to let World War II and Korean War veterans obtain National Service Life Insurance if they had not applied or had let policies lapse. The bill offers a one year window after enactment for health-acceptable applicants to secure coverage. Church stressed many veterans regret not maintaining or converting WWII coverage and note the plan adds protection for those already eligible under existing laws.

Fish Haven hosted a Saturday party for married folks with 4 absentees. A 1pm dinner was followed by an 8:30 program including solo and vocal numbers, an one act play directed by Frances Loveland, and musical performances by local residents. Former Geneva Lady Dies in Salt Lake City

Minnie Lashbrook Bischoff 71 died Monday in Salt Lake City of cancer. Born November 27, 1885 in Geneva Idaho, she was daughter of Edward Lashbrook and Mary Johnson. Survived by seven children and many relatives. funeral held in Salt Lake City with burial in Geneva.

Dale Parker Family Enjoy Plane Trip to Belgium

The Dale Parker family reports arrival in Brussels on January 29 after a long flight from New York via Scotland. They describe the 11 hour trip in a DC-7 at speeds around 420 miles per hour, with a 90 mile per hour head wind near Scotland. The letter notes joyful reunions, family visits, and pleasant weather, with mentions of Jeannine, Edgar, Grandpa Dutry, and Jeanette and Linda sending regards.

Tax Monies Remitted To State And County

County Auditor Sam V Tunks reports the first 1956 tax installments and other sources totaling 340363.46 have been remitted to state and county taxing units. Payments include Georgetown Village 1035.58 St Charles Village 501.16 and Class A School District 33 246098.46 with December remittance 43445.66. Further funds are not expected until after June collections.

Bloomington PTA Meeting Highlights January 31

The Bloomington PTA met January 31 at the schoolhouse with 53 present. An illustrated lecture by State Police Officer Mark Wilson, a short play The Unhappy Calendar by older students, and a Polio Drive talk by Hulme Dunford were featured and refreshments served.

Paris Lions raised about $180 through a house to house canvass with contributions from local residents. Additional sources such as shop container drives and cafe sales push the total toward $300 for the polio fund.

New Addition to St Charles Ward Amusement Hall Dedicated

The St Charles ward held a Sunday dedication for a new addition to its amusement hall with about 150 attendees. The program featured prayers, songs by the Relief Society Chorus, remarks by church leaders, and a tour of the new ward classroom, kitchen, restroom, and storage area.

Highway 89ers Stage Convention At Afton Wyoming

The 89ers International Highway Assn with an ambitious 10 point plan for 1957 58 was adopted during a two day board meeting in Afton Wyoming. Bentley Mitchell Logan Utah announced the program at a banquet attended by 144 officers members and guests from Star Valley Jackson Hole Bear Lake Basin and other along US 89. James Hawkes Buys Kastoria Building

James Hawkes became the new owner of the Kastoria Building in a deal closed last week. The purchase was from C. H. Grimmett on contract after prior owners, Mr and Mrs Harry Zala of Salt Lake City, had defaulted on payments and Grimmett repossessed the property through court action.

Slick Road Cause Of Auto Accident

Willis Hairup and family from St Charles were shaken after a Saturday afternoon crash on Main Street Paris. Hairup braked to avoid a oncoming car and a stopped truck, slick pavement causing the collision. Sherman Hairup suffered facial cuts and nose lip bruises, remaining in shock for hours. The truck belonged to a hide and fur buyer from Laramie Wyoming.

Freedom Week Observance Led by Montpelier Auxiliary

The Montpelier American Legion Auxiliary will sponsor Freedom Week in Bear Lake County with Mrs Jease Orchard as committee chair. Gov Robert Smylie urges Idahoans to back the Crusade for Freedom supporting Radio Free Europe and Free Europe Press. The group plans to mail letters to every county home within a week or ten days seeking support.

H. L. Spencer and Vera C Dalrmyple of Salt Lake City wed in the Salt Lake Temple on January 28. A banquet at Temple Square Hotel followed served by Spencer family members. The couple and guests included several Spencers and local friends. They departed February 4 for Arizona.

Heber Hart Family Welcomes Baby After Police Escort

Schools Rally For Clothing Drive Distribution

Bear Lake county school children donated 174 bags averaging 25 pounds each for a Christian Children’s Fund clothing drive. Items were clean wearable only and shipped freight collect to St Louis for international and domestic aid. Bloomington Old Folks Are Honored

The Bloomington ward held its annual Old Folks party on Saturday February 2 with a 1 30 p m start. The afternoon program featured multiple musical readings and remarks led by Thomas Painter and others including Bp T Jay Nelson and De ltha Painter. A banquet dinner for 119 followed at 3 30 p m with several out of town helpers and guests. Evening events began at 7 30 p m with Preston Thomas master of ceremonies and continued with vocals duets solos readings and dancing until the Harmony Boys orchestra closed the night after refreshments and benediction by Paul Haddock.

Soda Man Killed in Highway Accident

Anton Lallatin a 54 year old Soda Springs man was killed while operating a highway snow plow on Highway N 30 between Bancroft and Soda Springs during a heavy snow storm. He stopped to assist a stuck car when another vehicle struck him from behind, and he died at the Soda Springs hospital.
