Settlement thread of 1868 colonists in Montpelier valley
The 1868 arrival of General Rich and a Mormon settlement formed Montpelier's early community. They cleared rough passes, built homes from quaking asps, and established services, schools, and a church led by Bishop Williams. The winter survived with modest provisions as bear wolves and Indians roamed nearby, and the colony grew to about 48 men, 40 women, and 30 children with 1863 64 winters: no lawyers jails doctors or saloons and disputes settled by arbitration.
