Cold soak extends life of Idaho fence posts

Vernon H. Burlison of the University of Idaho says wooden fence posts can last 1 to 20 years longer with a cold soak treatment using pentachlorophenol in light oil. The process, safer and cheaper than creosote, adds about 15 years on average, costing under 10 cents per post and requires at least one half treatment for best results.
