State Board Adopts Levy Cut Amid Equalization Talks

The State Board of Equalization ended a two week session with a levy of six and one eighth million dollars raising $2,994,886 for state purposes, down from 1919. Total valuation stood at $489,060,493.76. Governor Davis praised cabinet style governance for the reduction. Joel A. Priest of the Oregon Short Line protested assessments on Twin Falls North Side branch and the St. Anthony to Ashton line, prompting slight rollbacks to $46,500 per mile and $46,000 per mile respectively, while the main line stayed at $65,000 per mile.

Gooding Named for U. S. Senate Nomination

Frank R. Gooding of Gooding won the nomination for United States senator in the state Republican convention after a contested ballot. Delegates later declared his nomination unanimous with support from key regional delegates. Representatives Burton L. French and Addison T. Smith also received renomination by acclamation from their districts.

Three Employees Hurt in Paris Mines

Roy Martin suffered a four inch skull wound from falling rock ore at the Western Phosphate Mine on Saturday night. C N Carlson of Arizona injured his back and foot when dirt caved in at the same mine Monday night. Seth Kelsey of Paris, recently working at Bear Lake Phosphate mine, received a light scalp cut from loose ore Monday.

Lynville Hodges aged 17 of Garden City was attempting to drive a wild cow when he dismounted a horse and the animal charged him into a trees area. The cow knocked him down and trampled his head, fracturing his skull. He was taken to Paris for treatment.

Land cleared and oats harvested on 80 acres near Blackfoot

The parcel including Paris meeting house Union dairy and Philemon Lindsay’s residence cleared 80 acres. Two oat crops were raised and harvested with a cradle due to scarce machinery. Oats hauled 90 miles to Blackfoot sold at $100 per hundred. Cash was scarce with a $500 poll tax and frozen wheat common. good flour a luxury. To be continued next week.
