Montpelier County Fair Announces Three Day Sports Program
Montpelier fair committee chair W. B. Towbridge says the sports lineup is set for the fair. Highlights include Wednesday softball finals at the ball park and a Wednesday dance, Thursday parade and softball games, carnival exhibits, Eddie Carson’s swing band, and a rodeo and races run through Saturday with all-day exhibits and evening dances. Over 1000 extra seats have been added with no parking charge and stable admission at the gate.

Warden Gaskins reports two loads of Rainbow trout 5 to 7 inches long were planted in county streams from the American Falls hatchery. Four hatchery truckloads are ready. Sage chickens show a strong rebound due to the closed season. Deer are plentiful in canyons and ducks and geese threaten grain fields. a suggested remedy is to plant free grain in mud lake country. Partridge sightings noted by Jessé Orchard on his east side dry farm.

Pugmire Sells First Alfalfa Crop At Camp Stewart
J R Pugmire, a prominent Lake farmer, sold his entire first crop of alfalfa hay on his Camp Stewart area farm for a price higher than last year. The several hundred acres yielded more than 1923. The crop was raised on Paris bottom land once used for wiregrass tullies and oven cattails. The article suggests other farmers with similar land might visit to see what can be developed in the wild meadow region.

Three Men Regain Sight On San Francisco Surgical Day
In San Francisco a 21-year-old groom John Terry O Connell received corneal transplants restoring his sight after a series of operations. His bride Betty Schochier, 19, waited as Morton 20, Natoma music student, also readied to marry after recognizing a teaspoon and scissors. Submarine accident claims county man in Navy blast
In Honolulu on August 17 a Navy inquiry opened into Tuesday’s explosion aboard the submarine Nautilus that killed Clarence B. Shepherd, 29, chief machinist's mate and Montpelier Idaho resident. Six others wounded as the 78 foot sub my returned from a trip. The blast, blamed on oil fumes from a Diesel engine, left the Nautilus only slightly damaged. Shepherd died at Pearl Harbor Navy hospital. He was born in Paris Idaho and survived by a widow and a three year old son in Honolulu. He also left multiple relatives in Idaho and Utah. Funeral plans were not available at press time.

Incumbent Henry Teuscher narrowly defeated Warren Sirrine for the second district commissioner seat, with Teuscher 40 to Sirrine 38 from six draws each. James N. Transtrum led among Democrats with the highest total and Sam V. Tunks won the county clerk nomination. 2370 votes were cast across Democratic and Republican tickets.
