Last Monday evening the Paris First Ward Primary officers met at Mrs. Madge Hoge s home and prepared puffed wheat balls to serve to all ward primary children at a social on Wednesday. Mr and Mrs Weldon Nye of Magna Utah visited Paris Friday bringing Mrs Nye s father Mr Collings home for the summer months after wintering with his children in Utah.
Mrs. Lessie Price hosted a literary club gathering on Monday evening. Mrs. Merinda Rebentisch led the review of There Should Be No Night with a group including Mrs. Amy Athay, Miss Mona Athay, Mrs. Theressa Rich, Mrs. Vera Budge, Mrs. Veda Jensen, and the hostess.
Walter Jaussi son of Seymour Jaussi married Beth Armstrong of Idaho Falls last Thursday in the Logan temple. Jaussi will be stationed in New York. Mrs Jaussi stays in Idaho Falls awaiting his return. A wedding dinner for Mr and Mrs Ralph Sleight was hosted by Mr and Mrs George Sleight with guests including Mrs Thomas Pugmire and Miss Ruth Butler of St Charles and others.
The WPB orders end to golf club production after May 31. Until then manufacturers may use only 60 percent of the mats used previously in making clubs.
A county meeting at the Bear Lake court house set plans for the nationwide wheat marketing quotas referendum on May 2. G E Hulme urged shifting resources to man and machine power for concentrated foods to aid the war and noted 1942–43 wheat supplies may exceed harvests. County committee members and state officials discussed voter education and the two thirds approval needed to continue quotas.
President Roosevelt designates Friday April 17 as Victory Book Day to urge citizens to send books to soldiers in the Army Navy and Marines. The Novelty Theatre in Paris I provides its lobby as a receiving depot for books from local contributors to support training camps and armed forces.
Preliminary survey work at the airport site is rapidly nearing completion with boundary lines established and runway layout underway. County Commissioners are coordinating land acquisitions and expect construction to start by May 15.
Mrs Edith Haddock entertained her Sewing club on Wednesday evening of last week with a small gathering at her home.
A quilting bee was held at the home of Mrs. James Dunn last Friday with ladies including Mesdames Thelma Wilks Iris Collings Christine Tueller Eliza Shepherd Emily Rich Eliza Cook Katherine Innes Ethel Arnell and the hostess. Mrs. Dunn served a delicious lunch.
Emma Shepherd hosted a Friday afternoon bridge gathering with L. L. Deardorff Charles Innes John Dougan C. O Moore I. B. Hann W. B. Hoge and Keith Warner in attendance. Mrs Innes captured the high score prize Defense Stamps.
Mrs W Smith Hoge accompanied Mrs James Bruce and daughter Helen Clark of Montpelier to Salt Lake City Sunday where they visited relatives including Mrs Mabel Howell and Mrs S E Rich and family. M and Mrs Weldon Grandy and family of Montpelier visited here Saturday.
The Secretary of Agriculture proclaims quotas when Wheat supply exceeds prospective consumption and exports by more than 35 percent. Farmers with 15 acres or more for 1942 harvest and normal production of 200 bushels or more are eligible to vote in the referendum. Polling sites by eligible voter committees will be announced later.
The Universal Pledge Campaign starts in Bear Lake county on April 20 as part of the wartime effort. R M Logsdon says pledges will show national unity beyond financing Defense Bonds, underscoring America’s resolve to win the war. Eligible residents are urged to pledge monthly investments and will receive a Minute Man sticker for pledging. Orland Nutt, stationed in Karachi, sends greetings from Paris and Bear Lake.
A Monday night wedding shower at Emerson gym honored Mr and Mrs Ralph Sleight. Guests from Montpelier St Charles Georgetown Lanark and Woodcross Utah attended. The couple received many gifts and will make their home in Woodcross Utah.
Corporal Alfred D Hill 21 son of Mrs Margaret Hill Paris has been ordered to report to the Infantry School Fort Benning Georgia for a three month intensive program. Successful completion will commission him a second lieutenant in the Army. He has already completed a three week preparatory course at the camp non commissioned officer's school and previously served as instructor with Company C of the 67th Battalion. Inducted July 7 1941 in Salt Lake City he went to Camp Wolters Texas for basic training.
The Montpelier Rotary Club distributed the last of ten purebred Duroc Jersey gilts to outstanding 4-H club members as a planned repayment on the original investment. Gilts were acquired from Roy Shutwell of Boise and Seth Jenkins of Aeon, with four having farrowed for 26 pigs. Members named include Wayne Clark Georgetown Owen Bartschi Nounan Norman and Lied Bartschi Nounan Wilmer Brown Liberty Sharp and Murry Matthews Liberty William Matthews Liberty Darrell Matthews Liberty Lynn Curtis Austin Liberty and Dennis Carlson Sharon. The project aims to improve swine management and pasture use under Rotary guidance with future pig returns next fall.
Mrs Della Hulme entertained the Sewing club Wednesday evening with Mrs Erma Rogers Mrs Archie Poulsen Mrs Grace Smedley Mrs Leona Gertschi Mrs Verona Stephens Mrs Lucille Rogers and Mrs Blanche Parker as guests. Delicious refreshments were served.
Mrs Lillian Langford entertained last week with a delicious lunch at a late hour for guests including Mrs Hattie Wallentine Mrs Opal Shepherd Mrs Virginia Taylor Mrs Lucille Wallentine Mrs LaPrier Athay Miss Ruby Bolton and Miss Mildred Nye.
While Mr and Mrs Herbert Spencer were in Salt Lake two weeks ago they decided Mrs Spencer should undergo a major operation, which was performed last Friday at the hospital there. Mr Spencer went back to Salt Lake Sunday, and returned home Monday. He states that Mrs Spencer is getting along fine, and is expected to arrive home this week.
A local defense themed event at St Charles on Tuesday April 21 offers prizes via Lucky Tickets Lucky Numbers and Lucky Spot. Intermission novelty numbers bring free prizes free punch and cookies with adult admission 10 to 40 cents.
