Bear Lake Fish Culture Operations and Lake Conditions
Preparations proceed for fish culture on Bear Lake with traps in Swan Creek partially installed by Utah and Fish and Game. The lake runs low, snow is heavy in the Bear River range, and a single hatchery worker will operate Laketown hatchery during native trout spawning. Since 1939, Idaho Utah and the federal government planted over three million fish in Bear Lake, including native trout, mackinaws, and rainbows, yet abundance remains limited. Bear Lake spans 19.4 by 7.6 miles, 111 square miles, with max depth 200 feet and hardness reduced by Bear River dilution.
