Skimping Colt Feed Costs More Than It Saves
J B Montgomery of Minnesota College of Agriculture warns skimping a colt’s first year and a half of feeding is costly. He advises a cool stall when mare works, regular suckling, early grain like crushed oats and bran, alfalfa and clover hay, and pasture with grain in summer. Regular trimming and care of feet support future soundness.

Favor Blue Grass for Feeding Swine
I M Mumford notes blue grass can profitably feed swine, with Missouri Experiment Station data showing about $20 value per acre from 1908 to 1912 at eight cents per pound. Blue grass requires more grain than alfalfa or clover and is less valuable for hog pasture from mid July to late August. Use a grain mix of six corn to one seed oil meal or ten corn to one tankage, and feed to gain about three quarters of a pound per day per hundred pounds live weight.
