Pepper Bill Promised Fair Senate Hearing
Senate Judiciary chairman Senator Henry F. Ashurst pledged a fair or more than fair hearing for Senator Claude Pepper’s bill banning direct or indirect newspaper ownership by common carriers. He will select a friendly subcommittee to avoid biased outcomes and will scrutinize the measure when the report is filed. The bill, introduced March 22, 1940 as S 3636, would jail officials of carriers who allow newspaper ownership after passage. A hearings subcommittee had not yet been requested.
