At Hale coal mine near White Haven Cumberland Eng, a violent explosion in the Number 3 North district killed eight miners and endangered up to 85 others. About 200 men were in the Haig pit when the blast struck. rescue parties with special apparatus fought afterdamp to reach survivors and recover the victims while 30 men were hospitalized for gas exposure.
John R Raobut announced that steel decking will begin next week and plumbers and electricians started work in the basement. Brick and terra cotta work to begin this week. Police investigate the late night grave opening of Mrs. Clydé Felker. Thieves removed stockings from her legs and disturbed the casket, leaving a stolen shovel at the scene. The corpse shows no obvious harm, post mortem exams proceed, and no arrests have been made.
The body of C. H. Bert Taylor a 45 year old carpenter foreman for Phillips Petroleum was slain on a road near LeFors early Wednesday morning. It was sent to Newcastle Pennsylvania yesterday afternoon accompanied by Mr and Mrs J C Alexander. Burial will be in Newcastle. Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian church. R A Taylor Jr of Baylor University has begun teaching history at Pampa High School succeeding A M Fox who plans to return to Oklahoma A and M after completing his master's degree.

Deputies Clyde Garner and Warren Belcher arrested a man last night in Warren County who is alleged to be a deserter from the U S Army at Fort Francis Warren. He is held in the county jail pending orders from army officers. The man left the army on May 3, 193K.
In Vernon Texas Emmeth Thompson is named as one of two men who beat Homer Crabtree near Le Fors Gray county last November Major Evans identified Thompson and Carl Hefner as the attackers after recalling seeing Thompson the night after the murder He described dragging Crabtree from a car and kicking him Evans later found Blood and footprints Peggy Dawson testified that Hefner and Thompson sought liquor at her house the day of the killing and boasted about beating Crabtree into submission.
OKLAHOMA CITY Jan 29 A Murray man Sam Hawks was elected to replace Lew Wentz as chairman of the state highway commission with the governor's designation and Boswell's approval Wentz remains on the board Wentz disputed Governor Murray's authority and issued a formal statement saying the order has no effect aside from guiding the commission and denied cooperation charges
MIDLAND Texas January 29 The examining trial for Buck Jones charged with the slaying of Weldon L Russell Abilene real estate man was delayed due to the absence of District Attorney W R Smith whose wife is ill The hearing was set for 2 oclock Judge M R Hill indicated a bare possibility the hearing may be held Friday A 70th district court grand jury is to convene Monday and it is expected the slaying will be investigated.

Friday and Saturday will be partly cloudy with light to moderate northerly to easterly winds along the coast. In Oklahoma expect fair conditions with little temperature change Friday and Saturday.
