Governor Moody’s Farewell Vote Shapes Inaugural Plans

In Austin on Jan 15 the forty-second legislature met in joint session to hear Governor Moody’s farewell and to canvass the governor race. Sterling led with 252,738 votes for governor and 274,415 for lieutenant governor Edgar Witt. Talbot and Tanner trailed. Sterling’s inauguration likely in the house chamber, with Witt as lieutenant governor. Rules fights dominated agenda, mil age and per diem bills passed, and a plan for a possible highway bond issue emerged with a near 200 million dollar proposal backed by Governor-elect Sterling.

Corsicana Kidnapping Tale Reveals $15,000 Ransom

Robert Cerf, 24, son of Isaac N. Cerf, Corsicana banker, was kidnapped December 10 and held until his father paid $15,000 the next day. Cerf Sr. spoke to the Corsicana Daily Sun, noting a ransom note and a plan that sent $16,000 to Dallas before four men intercepted the payment two miles south of Dallas. The boy was kept in a dark room and released that night without apparent mistreatment. Page 6.

Funeral Services For Thornburg Held

Funeral services for Troy Thornburg two year old son of Mr and Mrs Orville Thornburg of White Deer were held at 3 o clock yesterday at the first Baptist church with Rev Doug lay Carvey in charge. Burial followed in White Deer cemetery. Survived by three brothers and two sisters. Malone funeral home had charge of arrangements.

Atlantic Front Ships Seek Icebound Refuge On Sea Run

The Associated Press reports mid January brought severe cold across the North Atlantic route with ships reaching icebound piers. Extreme lows in Adirondacks Tupper Lake New York reached minus 21 as cold spread from Mexico City to the Midwest and Northeast. Temperatures dipped near or below zero in many areas while the West saw lighter rainfall. Snow covered Virginia and the Carolinas with Philadelphia recording 16 above for a notably frigid day.

Ex-secretary accused of embezzling from film star Bow

Daisy De Boe, former secretary to Clara Bow, is accused by state prosecutors of embezzling possibly over $16,000 and perhaps more than $48,000 from Bow’s accounts. Prosecutor David Clark outlines 147 cancelled checks and bank records as evidence while Armst rong details findings to show lack of good intent during two years of employment. De Boe, who has promised to reveal more, is set to testify first for the defense.

Floydada Texas residents learned that YT P Guimarin 71 ex district clerk Floyd county returned home from Jacksonville Florida detailing a month long wandering ordeal. He said two unknown companions aided by taking money and belongings after an incident near a Fort Worth suburban grocery on December 5 and later left him unsure of events. Guimarin traveled through Texas and Oklahoma before regaining his senses in Florida and arranging funds to return home.
