Texas lawmakers begin the new session with the election of officers as Clara Bow headlines a front page tale of woe. A jail contempt row ends with five defendants released as a judge and reporter shake hands after a settlement.
Sweetwater Texas January report shows George Parks released after a three day contempt sentence was reduced to nothing following a court hearing. Judge Fritz Smith remitted the remaining time after Parks’ habeas corpus motion, stating no arrest warrant or commitment order existed.
The Sweetwater contempt case raises questions about court power versus press rights and the role of editors in publishing public records. It notes the dangers of suppressing news, urges cooperation with authorities, and urges authorities to settle disputes through proper channels while preserving public access to legal proceedings. The 42nd Texas legislature began its first four months session with unity as both house and senate convened at high noon. Twelve bills and one constitutional amendment were introduced before night, with bills on quarterly tax payments and a state office building funding among the measures.

Will Rogers, famed cowboy humorist and actor, held talks in Fort Worth and Tulsa about a three week benefit tour to aid unemployment relief. He aims to visit Texas cities including Fort Worth Dallas Austin San Antonio San Angelo Amarillo and Waco with an eight speech schedule in seven days. A possible Pampa appearance depends on Oklahoma and Arkansas visits. The Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs will sponsor the Texas leg and city committees back the plan. Rogers returns to Oklahoma to organize February benefit shows with all receipts for relief. He urged taking funds from the rich to aid the poor.
The Church of God and Christ will hold a revival Thursday through Saturday led by Mother Norris. Sermon topics are announced as Crooked Woman Thursday, What a Negro Is Friday, and Old Time Religion Saturday. Johnie Box left the Pampa hospital yesterday.
Campbell received a five year stipended term after pleading not guilty to burglary. His alleged accomplice Fritz Kilpatrick drew a two year sentence last week. Jesse Smart, charged with stealing $60 from Stark and McMillen, got a two year term. Ace Pendleton case delayed for prisoner’s condition. Pendleton faces robbery charges for the First National Bank ofampa three years ago.
County officers were alerted that Mrs. A. Gorensio, 60, has been missing since Monday afternoon. She was last seen near the tax collector's office, described as 5 feet 8 inches tall with blue eyes and living with the Olsen family.
Secretary Daisy De Boe is accused of grand theft after actress Clara Bow testifies that De Boe wrote unauthorized checks totaling more than 16,000 from a Clara Bow special account. Bow recalls paying her secretary and questions De Boe’s purchases, including a silver dresser set given as a birthday gift. Rex Bell accompanied Bow to the Los Angeles courtroom.
Clothing was distributed to 25 families yesterday from the Welfare board storeroom in City Hall basement. Families ranged from one to ten members. Needed items include dresses for girls six to twelve, men's underwear, shoes for boys four to fourteen, and shirts for boys up to fifteen. The Welfare board asks for donations of these articles or pickup. Earlier there was a great need for men’s clothing and children’s shoes.
Funeral services were held at the Neal home for Jenel Burton and Julian Belle, infant children of Mr and Mrs O H Neal, who died Monday night at their home three miles south of Pampa. Interment followed in Pampa cemetery. Surviving are their father, another parent, two brothers Hudson and Hoyt, and two sisters Lawanda and Foys. Rev D H Truhitte officiated and Stephenson’s mortuary handled arrangements.
E Ritchie a Miami lawyer reported the theft of his Ford, parked on West Kingsmill. License 471-022 and motor A-1885422 listed. Mark Hargrove of Capitol Steel and Tron Company was admitted to Worley hospital after his right hand was jammed between iron pieces at the Combs Worley building during a connection. A Pla Mor auditorium dance is scheduled for 9 PM Friday.
Oklahoma City January 18 The thirteenth Oklahoma legislature heard a reform manifesto from Governor William Murray urging tax law overhaul and state highway department reorganization. He pressed abolishing or merging 18 boards, curbing lobbying, pushing education and college athletics reforms, and a corrupt practices bill.
Cowboy Red Thaler aged 115 from Phoenix, Arizona knocked out George Gem aged 185 from Philadelphia in the sixth round of a scheduled ten round bout in St. Petersburg Florida. The contest ended tonight after a decided early exchange and Thaler improved his record with the win.
Supb R B Fisher heads Pampa Independent School District for a second term and is reelected for 1931 32. Board commends the local school system and its director as growth continues while standards stay high. Equalization board named and tax payments lag behind schedule with 96 percent paid last year.
Pampa will go on the air at 9 pm with a strong program headlined by Stine's Seven Syncopators, a popular local dance orchestra. The hour will feature high school talent including the girls' trio with ukulele, Lois Stallings soprano with Rose Clayman at the piano, Harry Kelley tenor, Florita Freeman, and Andy Andrews with his ukulele trio.
The Mid-Gray No 1 McCullough well was shot yesterday afternoon by the Torpedo company using 260 quarts of glycerin from 3159 to 3220 feet. The well bridged, delaying any viewing by interested citizens. E W Stewart of Altus was dismissed from Pampa hospital after the event. Jesse's Melody Maids will provide music for a firemen fundraiser at the Chevrolet garage.
Fair to continued cold in Oklahoma with warmer temperatures by Thursday. Texas reports fair weather with a dip in northeast areas on Wednesday, then partly cloudy and warmer in the north and west. West Texas shows fair conditions Wednesday and Thursday with increasing warmth in north and east portions. Light to moderate winds coastward.
