In Chicago trade wheat fell as much as seven cents at the open with other grains down about five. Wheat later regained some, but closed near the day’s low, with May around one dollar and December slipping to 99 1/2 cents. Corn oats and barley followed mixed moves as rain reports tempered buying.

Lions and Rotarians held a joint installation ceremony in Childress last night attended by Walker, district governor, accompanied by Guy Gibbs of Chickasha Oklahoma. Judge W R Swing, in Childress as special judge in a civil suit, was a guest.
Bob Fuller, back from Fort Worth, quips they could not give him the whole city for Pampa as a 104 degree thermometer marks the heat. He calls the place God’s country while others chat about Cobb’s young mustache in a noisy crowd.
Texas and national officials push voluntary cotton reduction with cash relief up to 12 per acre for retired land. In Texas County efforts, O B Martin announces a minimum 4 495 000 acre goal as county agents and school instructors rally farmers to sign retirement contracts to protect wheat and stabilize markets.
Texas Supreme Court rules farm owners need not obtain licenses for trucks trailers or semi trailers or motor vehicles used exclusively to haul farm products to market or to prep sites. County Attorney Sherman White notes exemption applies to motor vehicles used for hire but not to trailers when hired. Ownership of such motor vehicles exempts registration and avoids prosecution for use on public roads.
Ferdinand Pecora told the senate banking committee that Otto H. Kahn’s firm paid no income tax in 1930 1931 or 1932 and that other partners paid negligible taxes. He cited a $1 million gross profit on a $20 million Chilean bond sale in 1925 and noted profits shared by Kuhn Loeb Lehman Brothers and Guaranty.
Thirty five men are at work on the new federal building doing concrete work. They pour for footings and sub basement slabs. Three dozen workers were on the job last week and the work should finish this week. Pouring for the basement foundation will start next week. About 3,000 yards of concrete remain to be poured. The project is handled by Stibbard Construction Company with W R Walker in charge and W ey Olmsted as government representative. Mrs Alva Phillips II is dismissed from Pampa hospital after a minor operation earlier this week.
Pampa was selected as the next meeting place for this Lions zone. C. Blanton was elected chairman in Clare ndon. Judge Broughton of Childress named zone secretary. Attending Pampa Lions were A. M. Teed, B. W. Rose, G. A. Clark, Clyde Fatheree, Charlie Thut, Geo Briggs, and R. C. Wilson, with Clarendon McLean Childress and Estelline clubs represented.
Paul Minnesota June 28 Andrew J Volstead coauthor of the Volstead Act lost his job today as legal adviser to the eighth district dry administrator He was indefinitely furloughed effective July 1 along with the administrator Robert D Ford and six state deputy administrators The federal economy axe hit many enforcement employees in the district Ford said the information came in a message from prohibition headquarters in Washington
John Nelson, former editor or publisher of several Canadian papers, was unanimously elected president of Rotary International in Boston. A founder of the Institute of Pacific Relations and honorary secretary of the Canadian Institute of International Affairs, he previously served as third vice president in 1931-32. Mrs. Claud Powell was admitted to Pampa hospital for treatment.
A Red Cross swimming expert arrives July 14 to begin reviewing life saving examiners at the municipal pool. Local Life Saving chair OG A Clark says the visit will cover theory practice device use and coaching for water safety and competitions. About eight hours of instruction are planned with free courses offered through Red Cross and Boy Scouts.
Lions and their ladies meet at First Baptist Church Thursday for the annual installation of officers. Banquet starts at 8 p.m. with Dr. H. H. Hicks as toastmaster. A surprise program is arranged by a committee led by W. A. Bratton.
San Francisco June 28 8024 of 0 347 precincts reported on repeal. State results show 11 030 against repeal 279 881 for repeal with precinct totals incomplete. Raw figures indicate statewide vote leaning against repeal as tally updates continue.
June 23 report says C. B. Carlisle and E. M. McCord were critically wounded after attempting to arrest a suspect. Authorities held little hope for their recovery as they received hospital treatment. In Wimbledon on June 28, Ellsworth Vines and Keith Gledhill, defending US doubles champions, were eliminated in the first round.
City commissioners last night directed that attention be called to the ordinance prohibiting exploding of fireworks downtown during the July 4 period or any other time. They studied a sketch by City Manager C. L. Sline of a wading pool for children but deferred authorizing work on it. The city is paying half of the cost of the Highway 33 rights of way in South Pampa and is negotiating for settlement of the Todd damage suit pending for several years. There may be a shortage of funds when these two matters are settled.
At a noon Rotary meeting C P Buckler led in presenting committee chairmen reports outlining wide and varied club work during the past year. Visitors Mrs H E McCarley Jr and Rotina Verde Dickey of Sherman attended. Tom Rose was absent. PAMPA Wheat market notes show No 1 wheat at 0 cents, down 5 cents from yesterday. local grain receipts small and several carloads expected to be shipped this afternoon.

French financial experts warned that France may be forced to devalue the franc as efforts to stabilize gold standards falter. The dollar fell to 19.96 francs amid speculation of drastic action and potential 15 percent import surtaxes. US stance on stabilization remained unchanged as Britain and gold nations sought support from Raymond Moley in Washington.
