Grainger McIlhaney issued a weekend order granting welfare department custody of a six year old boy admitted to Highland General Hospital for injuries from beating. A welfare employee moved for the order after hospital staff said the father tried to take the child. The worker told police both parents were intoxicated and no agreement was reached.

Gunman opens fire at Seymour Johnson AFB hospital
A man with a rifle entered the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base hospital in Goldsboro North Carolina and opened fire. Two men were killed and three wounded. The gunman fled in a blue and white car driven by a woman, seizing the hospital and the base in a multihour manhunt that ended without his capture. The wounded were Airman Anthony Leonetto Sgt. John Hayes and T Sgt Roger Hatterson.

Gordon J. Birchfield age 78 died after a heart attack while crossing a street intersection in Pampa. Funeral services 2 p.m. at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with Rev. M B Smith officiating. Burial in Fairview Cemetery. Born Glen Rose May 30 1895, moved to Pampa 1939 from Hollis Oklahoma. Gray County judge Don Cain has set 50 criminal cases for arraignment beginning Aug. 13. Ten cases are scheduled each day for Aug. 19, 14, 27, 28 and 29. Call of the docket for civil and criminal cases is set for 10 a.m. Sept. 10 to set cases for jury trial. All motions for trial by jury will be heard at 10 a.m. Sept. 24. Trials begin Sept. 26.

Man Charged For Destruction Of Property
Kurt Warren Kelley, 22, was booked into city jail Sunday night on charges of destruction of city property. Police seek an accomplice who fled after two suspects took red police lights from a horse trailer and hid inside a S Cuyler Street restaurant. A second officer saw them reenter the eatery and one man fled. Kelley later retrieved one red light. the other light was found broken under a nearby sedan.
