Manford, a former House member, was speaker in 1949. Senator A. R. Schwartz criticized the board for neglecting public interests amid rising rates. Teaver noted extended coverage costs up 379 percent since 1962 and a $55 million premium rise after last July’s rate decision.

Local amateur radio enthusiasts join 12 000 operators for annual Field Day exercises at Billy Davis Ranch near Lefors from Saturday to Sunday. Clubs from Nova Scotia to Hawaii and Yukon to Puerto Rico operate one to 18 stations to log the most contacts without commercial power. Since 1933 the ARRL runs the event to train for disaster scenarios. Generators supply local power as operators simulate outages and readiness for tornadoes floods or hurricanes. Area residents may visit the ranch during the event.
