GE Washington June 20 reports administration sources favor postponing wage reductions. Joseph B. Eastman coordinator of transportation, met with carriers' management committee considering a permanent 22 percent cut. Eastman said postponement possible and results depend on future developments. He represents Roosevelt. Burlington GM W F Thiehoff said committee will stay in Washington until Hashavar releases them. Eastman to meet Railway Labor Executives this afternoon. Schenectady NY June 20 (P) Fifty thousand GE workers to gain 5 percent raise effective July 1 after plant wage talks. The research lab shifts from four to five days.
Lima residents are urged to place a $5 deposit soon for the Pampa Daily NEWS special train to Chicago's world fair. With other trains filling up, Amarillo and nearby riders are advised to act fast to secure reservations. The fair cost is $34,000,000 to erect and promises a rare spectacle. Readers may choose side trips and extend travel by up to three days with a later Pullman return.
Mrs. Margaret Dolan died at her home in Butte Montana Sunday. Funeral services were to be held this morning from the family residence. She was the mother of Jack Dolan of this city, who was at her bedside after an accident weeks ago. Many telegrams of sympathy and flower orders came to Mrs. Dolan. Mr Dolan is connected with the local Texas Railroad Commission office.
Clara Zetkin, noted German feminist and communist, died unexpectedly last night at a sanatorium near Archangelskoye Archangel, Moscow region. She would have been 76 next month.
Red Michael reports feeling like three million dollars after a spell of wrestling in Fort Worth and San Antonio. He plans to leave again Thursday for Fort Worth, while Robert Knox discusses the Tish he caught Sunday with a conservative estimate of its size.
Pam pa Mayor W A Bratton urged residents to observe traffic laws as the city enters the National Traffic Safety contest. He cited last year’s 20 injuries and property losses from motor vehicle accidents and urged diligence by drivers and pedestrians to improve the city’s standing. Local notes include M Britton of Oklahoma City on business and Anna McCary of McLean shopping in Pampa.
Washington says no immediate move to stabilize currencies, awaiting further developments and normal market conditions. London conference debate centers on Key Pittman’s silver rehabilitation plan and U S stance on the gold standard and broader issues.
Members of the Junior chamber of commerce were entertained by young city residents this noon. Florence Haynes sang with Josephine Lane on piano, Rosa Nell Williams performed piano and vocal solos with a dance, Lucille Carlock delivered two readings, and Frank Hill organized the program. Entertainment will continue at Jaysee meetings ahead of the August Premier Days celebration.
In Austin on June 20 the Texas Highway Commission vowed to finish gaps in highways and avoid new designations while distributing a $25 million federal aid allotment across counties. Gray and Hemphill counties seek projects including 14 miles on highway 33 to the Wheeler line, and a link between highways 170 and 4. A Pampa delegation, with county representatives, will visit Judge Ely in Abilene to press for road work under the federal recovery program.
Humble district workers will elect two spokesmen to discuss wages and conditions with management on June 27 and 28. Voting is by secret ballot with tellers chosen jointly by managers and workers. Elections expand to 20 districts with one representative from the pipeline and one from production locally. Also noted is a 46 cent top price for Gray County crude. In Wellington Kansas, L G Coskey 27 of Corsicana Texas died after falling under a Rock Island train in Corbin while traveling with a partner seeking harvest work.
At the World Economic Conference deliberations Premier Collijn of the Netherlands announced that 4 pounds 10 shillings had been found and the owner could claim them by applying to him. Delegates rose from their seats as the disclosure was made during the session.
Wheat deliveries to the Barnett elevator in Hoover fetched sixty cents per bushel for 60 pound test grain. Farmers Wood, R. B. King, and others reported yields around 16 bushels per acre, with some grain under 60 pounds and some over. Osborne owns about large acres, Willner cut the rest, noting some grain was green.
Fort Worth legislator Duvall travels from San Antonio to Austin on horseback to urge a betting on horse races bill. He says the ride is for clients and to fund his horse and oats. Thurman provides the horse. the trip cost about $170 plus expenditures.
The Panhandle Plains Secretaries association will convene in Pampa on July 10. Carson Loftus and Rollo Townsend will preside for the host organizations, with the association president and a national representative among the leading speakers.
Fort Worth Texas ranger Tom A. Gardner, 62, faced a 4A charge after a Sunday night crash killed a 22 year old mother and seriously injured her two year old daughter. Gardner waived preliminary hearing, posted 2500 bond, and awaits grand jury as he denies driving the car. County Attorney Smith cites eyewitnesses contradicting his claim.
Ivy E. Duncan, head of the highway committee of the Board of City Development, names Gilmore N. Nunn, general manager of The NEWS, as Gray county director of the Panhandle Good Roads association. He will represent Gray county in all movements affecting the community and Panhandle at large.
Deputy sheriff Fleet Stuart, 53, was killed and bystanders Ted Blackman and A E Newman wounded in a shooting near Durango about 20 miles west of Marlin late last night. Authorities investigated the incident as a fatal shooting with no immediate motive revealed.
Governor Miriam A. Ferguson vetoed a corrective bill that would enforce railroad commission oil proration orders as felonies and disapproved a bill placing pipelines under the intangible assets tax. The veto preserves the original terms until about September 1 and notes the tax measure would extend the Daniel bill on intangible values of oil production.
A new fireman was added to the Pampa department this morning after the city commission met last night. C. A. McMurry becomes the newest paid force member, bringing the total to the chief and three firemen. The commission also invited bids for 600 feet of fire hose and ordered stricter enforcement of the city plumbing ordinance, with City Manager C. L. Stine initiating the order this morning. Other business was transacted but no action noted.
