In Berkeley California a suspected prowler Ernest M Silas 32 fatally shot Police Sergeant James Rutledge and a 4 year old girl after a three hour siege. Silas was wounded and later collapsed outside a house where he held three hostages before being shot by officers. The girl Magic Wolf died at hospital.

Gov. Dolph Briscoe signed into law rights for 18 to 20 year olds and a free public kindergarten for five-year-olds. The 18 year olds bill, effective Aug. 27, lets 18 year olds buy liquor and obtain abortions without parental consent. Senator Robert A. Born July 25 1899 in Arkansas, he worked 36 years for Humble Oil Co. Survived by wife Irene Mae Hoberts and six grandchildren. Lena Mae McDaniel 67 buried in Hedley Cemetery after graveside rites. Born June 21 1905 in Comanche Texas she lived in Pampa since 1997 and leaves one son Thomas Lane two sisters and a brother.

Motorist Kills Canadian Man in Texas Auto Hit and Run
A motorist changing a flat tire on State 136 south of Fritch Texas was struck and killed. The victim Michael Joseph Batenhorst a farmer from Canada was found along the road by a passerby. A spare tire and chrome fragments were located 600 and 200 feet away, and authorities sought the driver of a red or partly red 1962 model car.

Perryton Store Theft May Involve Ring from Lubbock
Officials say over $3 000 worth of clothing stolen from Castle's Dry Goods in Perryton may be part of a regional ring based in Lubbock. The burglary followed a pattern seen across the Panhandle and South Plains, with 50 suits 100 sport coats and 100 pairs of slacks taken. Entry was gained by prying the front door and a back exit likely connected to a waiting car. Lubbock police note similar incidents from Perryton to Snyder and Tohoka. a detective says the thieves could clear a store in two minutes.
