Soviet jets down Swedish patrol plane near Estonia

Soviet MiG fighters shot down an unarmed Swedish Catalina searching for a missing crew in the Baltic near the Estonian coast. Seven Swedes were rescued by a German freighter after the attack, with two wounded. Sweden demanded an immediate inquiry and sanctions while protesting at the Soviet embassy.

Jail Breakers Recaptured At Shamrock

Three teenage prisoners who escaped from Wheeler County jail Saturday night were recaptured and returned to jail. Deputy Sheriff Lake Black said all three were caught last night. a fourth youth, Bill Dees, 16, is still free and may face charges for aiding the escape. Turner, 18, Seals, 17, and Hicks, 18, were seized by Black and others on routes near Shamrock after hitching a ride with a farmer. Turner and Dees faced separate charges, while Scalf and Hicks were detained on automobile theft and burglary charges. The jail break followed recent auto thefts in the area.

Austin Man Charged In Car Accident

A two car crash on Highway 60 west of Pampa involved Samuel B McGee of Austin and James B McWilliams of Pampa. McGee, 23, fined 29 dollars for no operator license and improper passing. Damage estimated under 500 dollars. no injuries.

Panhandle Judge Killed In 3-Way Auto Collision

SAN FRANCISCO Judge H H Cooper eighty retired Amarillo Texas attorney was killed when his car collided with two others. His wife seventy eight suffered critical head injuries. Cooper and his wife were riding with Thomas Morris of Los Altos who blacked out at the intersection. Morris and his wife Leslie Cooper and taxi driver Mdrid escaped with minor injuries.

Two Hurt In Pursley Fire At Paint Shop

Two men Cal vine Wallis and Albert Wilson were hospitalized with burns and shock after a fire at the Pursley Motor Co paint shop today at 10:25 am. Firemen reported the blaze confined to the paint shop, starting perhaps while draining gasoline from a car. The interior, ceiling, and one side of the car were damaged, heavy smoke filled the building, flames extinguished in minutes, with no damage estimate given.

A 1981 club coupe was stolen about 1 am on Highway 88 near Panhandle after a hitch hiker pulled a knife on W A Rose of Amarillo. Rose, 605 Lamar, was forced out. suspect fled. Police have been alerted.

Left To Die Motorist Shot By Hitchhiker

Vincent Pavlik, 19, of Bridgeport Cann., held without bond after admitting he shot motorist St Mason Jonas, 37, of Leesville La, then left him in a ditch near Beaumont Texas. Pavlik, driving Jonas’s car, gave a police statement and led officers to the scene. He had been absent without leave from Camp Lejeune since March 10.

Three Cars Involved In Collision Here

Three cars were involved in a collision at 9 38 p m Sunday at the intersection of Francs and Frost. Mrs Ethel Brown driving a sedan is charged with running a red light and hitting a sedan driven by Mrs Lee Thorns Horton. The Horton car was through the intersection when the Brown car struck it. Damages are estimated at 540 dollars.

Heat-Breaking Winds Sweep Over Area

Heat breaking northerly winds swept over Pampa and Panhandle as temperatures hit 100 in Pampa and up to 110 in other parts. A cool front moved in but no relief was seen as dust risks rose with stronger winds. A 40 year-old farm laborer, Jarramillo Olmos, died near Pecos after collapsing in 107-degree heat. Heat spread statewide with Presidio at 110, and Dallas Fort Worth expected above 100.

Lost 81 Year Old Borger Man Found Dead In Canyon

An 81 year old Borger man John H. Crawford, missing since Thursday after leaving home with two dollars, was found dead in a canyon a few miles outside town. Sheriff Hugh Anderson suspects natural causes. Two boys from Phillips, Buford Bullard and Dean Seerman, located the body in midafternoon as searchers closed in. Crawford was married and had lived in Borger.

M Sgt Ienege Fabio will be in the Pampa recruiting office at the post office June 19 and 20 representing the Women's Air Force and the Women's Army Corps. A major blast at the U S Army ammunition depot near Haeundae Korea killed a Korean and wounded an American officer. Four U S soldiers were reported missing as fires spread and residents fled.
