The Forty-Third Texas legislature adjourned after a record-breaking run. Fifty house members and 21 senators met from January 10 to May 9, with pay rising then dropping. The $500,000 expense translated to about $11.36 per minute, while observers noted inexperience and hurried passage of bills.
An explosion at a carbon black plant in Borger burns ten workers from a tip-cleaning crew after a gas line valve was opened instead of closed. Bruce Stewart, plant manager, cited a coworker told him the valve was left open for two hours, allowing gas to seep from a four inch line before torches prompted a deadly flash. The two most seriously burned were described as extremely painful.
The Southwest Race Meet at Panhandle Downs opens Friday at 2 pm with more than twenty horses from Panhandle stables entered. The event boosts regional interest in flat horses and breeding, while Plains Fine Horse Association forms at Amarillo to promote better horse breeding and participation across area towns.

London reports President Roosevelt agreed to call a debt conference in Washington. British ministers see the move as satisfactory while Chancellor Neville Chamberlain prepares to reference a token payment on the $75,950,000 debt due US tomorrow. An American note, supervised by Roosevelt, offers to accept the partial payment only as an installment and preserves the remaining claim.
Rotarian and Houston editor Diane Jack Dione told the Pampa Rotary Club and guests that gasoline tax evasion harms every business and worker. He argued two cents funds highways and supports 120000 jobs, with state audits and new penalties tightening collection. Visitors included several Amarillo residents. The Pampa Red Cross chapter reports two years of extensive work in its area. It includes flour clothing and cash disbursements totaling 622.71 direct relief 23.11 to disabled ex service men and 255.84 in a production program. The chapter supplied 800 families with cotton clothing and flour while 7000 yards of material yielded 261 dozen garments 158 blankets 52 comforts and 139 yards of other cloth valued over 8000 dollars.
Jimmie Mattern, preparing an around the world flight, plans a second nonst op flight to Alaska from Khabarovsk after Soviet mechanics overhaul his plane. He faced weather, machine trouble, and misdirections delaying the transpacific segment, landing again at Khabarovsk at 6 20 a.m. Moscow time on Tuesday.

Lex Schneider, long involved in welfare and unemployment relief in Pampa, was elected chairman of the local Red Cross chapter, succeeding John J. Bradley. The board named Farris Oden as vice chairman and listed officers handling secretary tasks, life saving, volunteer service, home service, junior Red Cross, publicity, roll call, disaster relief, and other key roles. Field worker C. E. Palmer from St Louis attended and offered suggestions.
T. A. Cox, a Santa Fe employee who visited the Century of Progress exposition in Chicago, says the fair offers enough free exhibits to fill four days. He notes the best part of the fair is to be seen, with more details on Page 6.
