R. F. Merrell, 7, longtime Mobeetie resident, died suddenly at 11:50 p m after a heart attack. He had been ill about a month. Washington reports Secretary of Labor Lewis B. Schwellenbach died at 2 40 a m in Walter Reed Hospital after a long illness. He was 63 and had served as senator and judge before leading the Labor Department for three years. President Truman expressed deep regret and praised him as a great public servant.
O Weapworth manager of Pampa Chamber of Commerce was elected one of five directors of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce at its 42nd annual convention in Wichita Falls Tuesday. Other officers elected were Carl A Blading Mercedes new president R B Blanton Port Arthur vice president and Ben Marable Paris secretary treasurer. Directors named included M D Fanning San Angelo Herman Brown Caru Voana Worth L Coffey Olney and Joy W Arnold Kilgore. The Wedgeworths returned from the convention where he served as song leader.
Air Force Secretary Symington announced the XS-1 research aircraft has flown much faster than the speed of sound in several tests. The rocket plane aims for 1,017 mph at 40,000 ft and 1,700 mph at 80,000 ft, with Yeager noted as a test pilot.
Washington scene as senators push a final vote on a peace time draft bill after three days of fast paced sessions. Key provisions would require 18 to 26 year olds to register with two years service for 19 to 25 year olds, allow 160000 volunteers for one year training, expand regular and reserve forces and revive wartime draft administration for two years. Federal aid for Gray County's Highland General Hospital was assured as a $336,145.17 hospital construction allocation passed the Senate and moved to President Truman for signature. Gray County officials expect immediate aid, while local estimates show the hospital at 100 beds with a 70 bed option if downsized. The straw poll showed local support for a bond issue of $85,000 to fund the project, with final County Commissioners Court action due Friday.
The Rev Beauford A Norris pastor of the First Christian Church since Oct 1 1939 resigned to enter the University of Edinburgh Scotland. He served 28 months as Air Force chaplain traveling from Australia to Japan. He and his family depart Sept 23 aboard the Britannic for Liverpool arriving Oct 1 and will live in Scotland for two years while he pursues a PhD at New College.
Phillip Smith of The Plats Shamrock received a 12 year term in Huntsvilla Penitentiary for the December 9 murder of Munroe Robinson in Robinson’s home during a quarrel over a card game. Jury found him guilty of murder with malice aforethought. District Judge Lewis M. Gondrich imposed the sentence after a Tuesday verdict. The case drew attention as one of Wheeler County’s heavier sentences. Smith was represented by Bo Templeton. In a separate verdict, George Lyons of Wellington was acquitted of robbery charges after witnesses were unavailable.
Funeral arrangements for Mr. and Mrs. Marquis L. Smith are pending at Duenkel-Carmichael Funeral Home after their deaths in a midnight auto crash in Memphis Tennessee. Smith, 32, formerly lived in Pampa 1935 to 1940 and worked for Magnolia Oil Company. He served in the Army, was injured in a car wreck, and has been paralyzed at the Memphis Veterans Hospital for two years. Mrs. Smith, 20, Hazel B. Cornell of White Deer, recently graduated from White Deer High School around 1996 and lived in Qodesan with their eight year old son Mickey Allen. Her mother Alice Mystiff, formerly of White Deer, has stayed with the family since the hospital admission. She is survived by four sisters Myra Everett Hutt Skellytown, Mrs. GC Jennings Odessa, Mrs. Laura Cox Borger, and Mrs. H Hoppe Ropeq Arl, and one brother OG Hy Cornell. The bodies will be sent from Memphis to the Buenkel-Carmichael Funeral Home.
A man named Sosa, 20, wandered into the station area and appeared intoxicated. Police reported he was involved in a misstep with a brand rail, leading to charges of intoxication and a $10 fine after an incident at the city headquarters.
