American airman Jimmie Mattern, circling the globe, landed near Prokopievsk, Siberia, after a gas line leak nearly overwhelmed him and broke his stabilizer. He reported fumes sickened him and he planned temporary repairs to Krasnoyarsk before resuming the dash. He said sleep was scarce but hoped to rest in Krasnoyarsk and continue toward the next leg of the world flight.

Heat, drownings, and violent storms sweep much of the central and eastern region. Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana report multiple fatalities from drownings or wind related incidents while New York, Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania tally several deaths from storms. Temperatures hit 102 in Bloomington and Paducah as crops suffer from drought and lack of rain.
