Tobacco Man Warns Against Generalities In Doctors' Report
New York based Timothy B Hartnett, chairman of the tobacco industry research committee, urged smokers not to be misled by sweeping generalities in a doctors report on smoking and lung cancer. He accused the Atlantic City study of ignoring geographic, occupational and emotional factors and challenged the study’s data and questionnaire as biased. He noted only 68 proven primary lung cancer cases among 285 reported, out of 8,105 deaths in a 32 month span among 187,000 men aged 50 to 70 at the survey’s start. He said laboratory work has not proven smoking causes lung cancer.
