Daring Detroit Newsroom Robbery Seizes $65,000 Payroll
About 150 employees were held at gunpoint as six armed men robbed the Detroit News building shortly after 11 am. They escaped in a car with most of the weekly payroll totaling $65,000, dropping cash in the street during a gun battle with officers. Patrolman Guyot W. Craig was shot in the foot and traffic officer George Barstead was fatally wounded. an advertising staffer Joseph Worten aided by being wounded in the hand and leg. Witnesses reported another bystander shot. his name was not learned.
