Russ Bartlett faced a potential $500 fine for not appearing in court after a summons. He sought Sheriff Graves but was told the sheriff was absent. Deputy Pipes said the department was not seeking his arrest and Bartlett would be called before Judge Ewing to explain. The trial for Sheriff Graves on a bond conversion charge was set for last Saturday, but a defense motion to quash the indictment was granted after Bartlett failed to appear.
The Pampa hardware company was robbed at about 4 am Sunday with a cash loss of around 30 dollars. Entry was gained by blowing a hole in a fireboard wall separating the shop from the Johnson hotel boiler room. Some hunting knives were taken while occupants heard the breakin. Sheriff’s deputy Jeff Guthrie found no fingerprints on the register or wall opening but photographed clock faces. County officers pursue the case.
R E Pop Frazier announced after a meeting at Central auditorium that two school bands may form with about 100 students before fall. Forty pupils enrolled for lessons and band practice, with three group lessons weekly plus three band or orchestra sessions in summer. He aims to have both bands ready for the first football games.
Dallas dispatch reports no new Democratic governor filings. 13 candidates already named with others possibly joining if mailed before midnight. Work to start immediately with completion in 75 days for wards and 90 days for the high school.
June 3 Amarillo health officers set an indefinite quarantine at Potter County jail after two prisoners contracted smallpox. Entry or exit from the jail is barred and no prisoners will be brought to court. The jail houses 604 inmates. Board to Meet First Christian church directors asked by Judge Duncan to convene at 8 pm for important business.
A loss of several hundred dollars occurred at H. Combs’s Bow ers City store when burglars forced a window, wrecked the safe and stole all charge tickets. The safe held no money and the cash register only one dollar. Five mile radius search failed to locate the safe and cash register. County officers are on the case. this is the third theft since Friday night. Tulsa reports note golf medalist Dorothy Pardue and match results in the trans Mississippi event.
Brownsville dispatch reports the Rio Grande gradually receded last night and today wiping out the danger of flooding Matamoros, Mexico. A separate item notes a hydroelectric project for Montross, Canada, with an estimated cost of 6 million dollars.
