A riot near the county jail in Tampa left 19 killed or wounded as troops used machine guns and riflemen to quell a mob. Police report 30 arrests of suspected rioters as a violent standoff persisted around the jail and nearby church positions.
Peking officials and Marshall Chang’s headquarters lodged protests after Japan landed 2000 troops at Tsingtao. The foreign office in Peking and Chang’s command level both issued formal objections to the move.
The News Society items call for social gath erings and personal mention. The society editor requests callers to provide guest names and event details by phone or mail to the office.
Pampa Rotary plans to help boys place pure bred hogs in the Pampa area over the coming months. Charles T. Thomas will oversee financing and details. A contest with Panhandle Rotary is accepted, with Dalhart and Canadian to be considered. Marion Howard to represent the club in setting attendance rules. Visitors Wayne O Keefe Merritt Welsh and Dave Warren from Panhandle attended.
Pampa hospital opens today for emergency cases with 10 patient rooms and an operating room ready. Emergency service will run day and night while completion continues on the floors and furnishings arrive. Mrs Beverley Barker and three nurses are on duty. M A Turner, secretary, has an office in the building.
Pampa welcomes a new fire truck and siren. Workmen erect a twelve foot high platform at the rear of the fire station to house the siren. A company representative assists the fire brigade and driver in unloading and proper equipment care.
A jury in Amarillo returned a verdict of guilty against Robert Dhike, an Amarillo youth, in the murder case tied to the July 19, 1725 killing of Fred Conner, a Talila automobile salesman. Anew trial will be sought.
Three year old child, baby of Mr and Mrs Tonk, is severely ill with whooping cough measles and pneumonia. He is one of four children and the father is out of work. Family reportedly needs food and local People were urged to assist.
The Chamber of Commerce committees chaired by J. M. Dodson and J. H. Lavender met yesterday to plan an industrial survey of Pampa and a steady, individualized membership drive. They noted about 100 eligible residents not yet members and will identify suitable locations and prospects for new industry while avoiding a large current campaign. Irene Allen of Noelton visited for shopping.
Tremors described by coast guards and municipal officials as either explosion or quake shocks were felt from Toms River to Sandy Hook, about fifty miles. No damage reported, but Asbury Park saw considerable excitement as shocks neared severe levels. Fort Hancock authorities suspect a slight earthquake traveling northward.
A petition calling a special district bond election and detailing hard-surfacing routes will be presented to the Chamber of Commerce Thursday for approval. The road committee has worked through the week and believes an acceptable program is outlined.
Fort Worth hosts the I Thirty-Sixth division reunion as Oklahoma and Texas soldiers parade the sidewalks recalling World War II days. The gathering marks the first postwar reunion for the unit.
Gulf Refining company buys the L and Jameson property at West Foster avenue and Gray street across from Murland filling station. Plans a billing station and office building with a purchase price around 15000 dollars. Property spans half a block on Foster and half a block on Gray.
Claude June 1 Two hundred or more boy scouts from 24 counties of the Texas Panhandle and three Oklahoma Panhandle counties will attend the Amarillo Area Boy Scouts encampment at Dripping Springs from June 1 to 24 announced by Tom H Nelson area executive.The camp includes a concrete mess hall hospital staffed by three registered nurses a manual arts building and administration building with expert instruction in archery signaling camper attire and other special branches.
The Court of Criminal Appeals denied Verdin and Kuehne of Travis County habeas corpus relief from a speeding fine, upholding the validity of the state speeding laws in an Austin ruling reported by The Associated Press on June 1.

The Cocktrell Mellroy well near Borger, burning since Saturday, was extinguished today by Tex Thornton. Mrs Banks went to Amarillo. Mrs John Roby spent Wednesday in Amarillo.
Empire Gas and Fuel Company buys 20 acres from C. W. Dodd in southeastern section 90 block 3, three miles southeast of Pampa, planning a large booster station and a 20 inch gas line to Kansas markets. About 40 to 50 men to be employed. construction will take months as routes are signed and rights of way secured. Dodd retains oil and mineral rights after reportedly selling at 150 dollars per acre.
Cuyler street is now open and mirroring artists can sample a long sketch of smooth road. The bearing a weaving blade on Wester Wyenna and paving is expected to finish in the next euro weeks.
Busby was placed on a city salary this morning as Lux possessor and collector. The council decided to place him with other city officials.
