The Centerika annual from Center high school will again be printed by M. E. Baker Co. of Oxford after a recent contract award. This marks the third edition with a 500 plus copy run and about 48 pages. It will feature enamel paper and extensive illustrations.
Sunday School at 10:00, worship at 11:00. League discussion at 6:30 on What it means to be a Christian led by Mrs Mabel Goodrich. Bishop Leete to speak at University Vesper and preach in Iowa City. Oxford evening service canceled to allow attendance there. Donations to American White Cross for Methodist Hospital Des Moines due by Sunday morning. Adult memberships one dollar.
Fourteen Cosgrove Consolidated seniors will graduate in late May, seven boys and seven girls. The class includes Linus J. Griffin, Mary C. Holland, Vera C. Kelly, Veronica M. Maher, Frank H. McCabe, Wilhelmina A. McCabe, Thomas J. Norris, Clarence R. Organ, Minta M. Rohret, Anna Marie Scheetz, Joseph N. Scheetz, Orlo Raymond Stockman, Leo Stockman, Evelyn A. Welsh, and others.
Mr and Mrs Herman Franke and Bernard along with Miss Esther Henderson of Iowa City and Mrs Mary Douglas and Mr Albert Douglas joined Sunday dinner hosted by Mr and Mrs Fred Henderson to celebrate Esther Henderson's birthday. Lena Louis south of Oxford sent a twig from her apple tree as blossoms begin after warm weather. Last week the M E Baker Co printed and delivered a fine order for Rev Henry Holthaus of St Peters church Cosgrove.
The ladies of St Marys parish will hold a bake sale in the Earl Hevern rooms Saturday afternoon and evening. Proceeds support parish activities.
The W C O F hosts a St Patrick's program at the auditorium Monday evening March 17 at 7 45 featuring music orchestra readings solos and dances by Edna Doty John McGillicuddy Stella Clear Elaine Clear and others with many pieces including My Wild Irish Rose Wearing of the Green and That Old Irish Mother o Mine Tickets 15 cents for children 25 cents for adults and 50 cents for the after program dance
Last week the community welcomed Rev Henry Holthaus the new priest of St Peters Church Cosgrove He impressed onlookers with enthusiasm and a sincere wish to improve his church and the surrounding community.
Lone Tree won first in oratorical and humorous divisions and third in dramatic at the county contest held Friday night at the Johnson County courthouse. Solon took second, Oxford third. winners advance to next Friday’s smaller-schools contest at Town City courthouse.
Public notice warns against non members riding the fire truck and crowding regular firefighters. It urges only authorized fire department members to board the vehicle and stresses proper instruction and safe operation. The message aims to prevent interference with firefighters preparing to respond to calls.

A tire of undetermined origin was brought under control at about 4:30 Friday morning, almost destroying the Pat Gilroy place farm home three miles west of Tiffin. Tenants Mr. and Mrs. Leo Donovan and family had recently moved, with other buildings remaining intact. Neighbors rushed to protect the remaining structures. the 80-acre farm is owned by a West Liberty man.
A group including Frank Novak Leonard Novak Paul Vercerka Antone Vercerka Albert Kadera Tony Shupitar Godfry Shupitar Will Shupitar Leonard Shupitar Tom Edwards and Adolph Dohnalek held a wood splitting bee at Joe Shupitar’s home on Saturday. Joe Shupitar Jr. and his parents are in Iowa City due to illness. Several relatives and guests from Iowa City Swisher and nearby areas joined Sunday dinner at the Schrepp home.
Evelyn Fitzgerald won second place with The Swan Song at the county declamatory contest in Iowa City. Richard Bireline took second with An Appeal for Genuine Farm Relief and Vivian Winters earned third with Naughty Zell. Evelyn and Richard advance to Iowa City Friday March 14. Domestic Science class visits cooking school this week and will report on demonstrated foods.
Grade Notes Room II reports perfect attendance for the past week. Visitors include Mrs. Delmar Stratton and Mrs. G M Ludwig in Room I, and Mrs. Stanley James, Mrs. Henry Maske, and Mrs. Delmar Stratton in Room II. Bobby Bireline of Grade I shows eight weeks of perfect spelling. Pupils of Miss Miller's room gave a cheerful handkerchief shower on Tuesday afternoon, presenting their teacher with a warm surprise and showing strong classroom spirit.
Masonic members and Eastern Stars and their families held a party in the hall Friday evening. Five hundred was played at eight tables with Milo Novak and Mrs. Frank Sponar winning high scores. Consolations went to R. J. Miller and Mrs. Robert Speers. A committee served a lunch at the close.
Three tickets enter Oxford city election with F. L. Schweitzer for Treasurer and W. J. Simpkins for Assessor on all ballots. The Peoples and Tax Payers tickets filed yesterday, following an earlier Citizens ticket, set March 31 as election day.
Oxford independent school election held at the town hall Monday afternoon. D T Ellison and W J Simpkins won three year terms as directors, succeeding W R Larimer and M W McDonough. M P Wilkinson became treasurer for three years, replacing W F Schmidt. Grand social rally for Odd Fellows and Rebekahs held at Solon on Wednesday night March 12.

For five days work has remodeled the rear of the German building on Augusta avenue. City fenced off sidewalk area months earlier due to feared brick collapse. Remodeling led by Fritz Beck, Clarence Hutchinson, and Joe James. Mr and Mrs Wayne Carter of North English were Sunday dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Tom Doolin.
A group of Lucille Hevern's friends gathered Friday evening at her home to celebrate her 14th birthday with games and a luncheon. Attendees included Dorothy and Sibyl from Iowa City and many local residents. The Cosgrove school chose M. E. Baker Co. of Oxford to print their commencement invitations and name cards after considering other options.
At a Monday meeting seniors chose their class flower the tea rose colors old rose and silver and motto Do more wish less. Juniors plan the Junior Senior Banquet after Easter on Friday night March 14. Cosgrove basketball hosts Oxford on the local court while baseball prep continues for those not on the team. The varsity fared 24 27 against Conroy in Sigourney after beating Oxford in the B tournament final. Several players missed trips due to injuries.
An old Tiffin resident, W M Miller of Lincoln Nebraska, marks the March 14 anniversary of the Miller farm sale and relocation to Nebraska. He recalls visiting former friends near Oxford and asks the Leader be sent to his brother in Taylor Nebraska, praising Oxford as the nicest place he knows.

A school event in District No 2 features a boxed social and program led by Miss Floerchinger on Friday evening March 14. The varied program includes readings, pantomimes, plays and a one act comedy, with cast members such as Anna Krofta Jimmie Doyle and Clare Doyle. Boxes sold at program end. nonbox holders pay 10 cents admission. The Rebekah Lodge meets March 20 with music readings and a dialogue, followed by games.
Mr and Mrs Lou Doty learned from their son Elmer in the U S Navy that they are on a cruise to the east coast and will reach Panama the last of February.
Myr. Louie German and son Jack of Rock Island visited his mother Mrs. J. H. German Thursday. Repair work started on the German building Thursday. A new wall is being built on the south west side.
In the next Leader issue M. E. Baker, running on the Citizens ticket, pledges to publish his platform. Other candidates are urged to publish theirs if they wish to compete.
Twelve members of the Oxford High Alumni Association are preparing a three act comedy titled He's My Pal to be performed Wednesday evening March 19 in the auditorium. Directed by Miss Ruth Linkhart the cast includes Virl Oakes Bill McDonough Susie Ellison Mary Bireline Faye Horn Jona Floerchinger Elmer Henderson Donna Oakes Thelma Floerchinger Orlo Ives James Holland and Edna Doty.
Rev. A L Panoch of St Wen ceslaus church in Iowa City drove out Tuesday and placed a nice order for printing with the M BE Baker Co. He said he had been recommended as doing good work at a very reasonable price.

Several families report mumps illnesses including Mrs. Oscar Bigelow and Mrs. Louis Vorral’s households. Visits span Durant, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, State Center, and Oxford with local residents traveling or recuperating. Ward Saxton returns to University High after an illness. more local social and family movements noted.
Ten relatives and friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Henderson Tuesday evening and pleasantly surprised them. The evening featured card games and a luncheon. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Henderson, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Dostal, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Maske, Mr. and Mrs. John Deagood, and Mr. and Mrs. George Dahnke.
The U S T club met at Russell Mann’s home Friday evening for two tables of 600. Bobbie James earned honors for a high score, Neil Son Simpkins took consolation. Lunch was enjoyed.

A bake sale is scheduled for February 22 at 16 Earl Hevern rooms. Proceeds benefit the community program and local groups.
