Desperate chase ends with near-murder at coal yard

A narrator recalls a wild night in a coal yard during a confrontation with Clanahan and Hazen. Bullets fly from a cannon-like pistol while Hatch orders, and the trio pursue the narrator toward locked gates and a submerged escape via a clam-shell crane bucket. In the end a late police patrol intervenes, and the narrator reflects that their actions only endangered the boss and risked legal trouble.

The Man at the Window in the Major's Den

The narrator details political intrigue around the railway fight and a tense night watching for a potential intruder. A shadowy figure escapes the back, then a window reveals a familiar face, the dissipated nephew of President Dunton, tying personal danger to the broader power struggle.

Name on the Register and a Nighttime Intruder

A tense scene unfolds as a gunman lurks outside Major Kendrick’s house late at night. The intruder turns out to be young Collingwood, the president’s nephew, prompting questions about loyalties and risk as the boss’s life and Mrs. Sheila’s safety hang in the balance. The moment ends with the arrival of the family and a swift exit by the outsider.
