A prisoner named Harkey nears freedom after a perilous climb to the edge of the air. He swings onto solid ground but is halted by a guard who orders him to rise, indicating the eventual deliverance was near yet thwarted at the last moment.
An old seaman recalls 1879 aboard the brig Heave Ho from Ceylon to San Francisco with a cargo of rice. A small leak swells as the rice absorbs water, overwhelming pumps and buckling planks. The crew abandons ship as the hull bursts, a moonlit rupture sending rice into the air.

Mr. R. P. Jones, chairman, is in Town City this week for meetings with the Board of Supervisors. Mrs. Geo Schwab and daughter Thelma were Des Moines visitors Saturday. Evelyn Fitzgerald is improving after an influenza attack.
