State Democratic executive committee in Jackson reviews last Tuesday’s primary returns with no statewide contests. Lee M. Russell named governor nominee. H. H. Casteel II wins lieutenant governor by a narrow margin of 800 votes. W. J. Buck tops clerks. W. R. Wilson and S. M. Morgan win railroad seats. Buck leads with 29,000 majority. Frierson concedes. Oxford Public Schools To Open For Grades One Through Eight

The Oxford Public Schools schedule a Friday morning September 5 opening for grades one through eight with classification and enrollment in the school rooms. Pupils will receive book lists and begin duties at 8 30 Monday September 8. The general opening exercises are set for Monday September 8 at 10 00. The ninth to twelfth graders will be classified after the exercises. Abbeville hosts Lafayette County Sunday School Convention with dinner on the ground.

Return of Gov Russell Draws Town in Torchlight Procession

A large crowd met Gov elect Lee M Russell and Mrs Russell at the depot at 7:35 pm with a music band and torchlight parade through South Depot, University streets, and to the Court House yard where over two thousand gathered. Speeches by Eskridge toastmaster John Falkner Jr and others praised Russell and called for four years of honest government.

Oxford voters urged to keep Beanland and Farr in office

Public schools to open Monday in Oxford for 1919 1920

The Oxford Public Schools announce the 1919 1920 session will open Monday at 10 am. Grades below high school meet Friday for classification. Faculty remains largely unchanged except for A P Hudson and Mrs Sinton and Stacy Farr. Physics to be offered with lab. Latin students may study French or Spanish for a small tuition. The repaired building is deemed safe and sanitary for the opening.

Mrs G W Price Returns Home After Illness

Mrs G W Price, two weeks with her mother in Bessemer Alabama due to Mrs Jones illness, returned home Sunday night with her condition still critical. Court convenes Monday and school starts Monday. The A S opened with a large picnic at College Hill. First bale of cotton brought in Tuesday, compared with Aug 23 last year. Rev W W Woolard and son Walter back from the Ozark mountains. An all day song service at Mt Zion Sunday with Mrs A F Calloway giving Sunday School work address and report from County Convention. Mrs Jay Harris and her little son from Memphis spent the weekend with aunt Mrs J S Calloway.
