Ex Senator James Harlan Dies After Illness
Ex United States Senator James Harlan died at his Mount Pleasant home after a lung congestion illness complicated by liver trouble. He collapsed last Sunday, and his daughter Mrs Robert Lincoln of Chicago was at the bedside. Funeral planned at Mount Pleasant’s Wesleyan chapel. He served as Iowa’s first State Superintendent of Instruction, was U S Senator from Iowa 1866 1879, and held cabinet posts in Lincoln’s administration.

A Manila dispatch reports the steamer Siam left San Francisco August 19 with 45 horses and 25 mules. A typhoon in the Isthmus north Lagoa wrecked the cargo, killing all but 16 mules. The vessel rolled heavily, boats were smashed, and the injured animals were killed and thrown overboard as the storm eased.
