Telegraph digest notes Turkish killings of Armenians near Kemah and Erzingan, a U.S. judge setting bail for Carton Rotort in New York, and Gladstone's anti Turkish speech. Also reports dynamite finds near Dublin, Dongola dispatches, czar visit debate, U.S. and Canadian economic data, and notable deaths and gifts including Mrs. Johnson and Gen. Mexia.
William Jennings Bryan, Democratic presidential candidate, spoke three times in Brooklyn last night. At the Academy of Music, an overflow outside, and a huge rally of laboring men, he denounced the influence of corporations and defended states rights, stressing enforcement of laws and criticizing Supreme Court decisions.
Reported mood at Democratic HQs shows Indiana supporters converting to free silver, with Indiana figures backing Bryan and Sewall. Missouri canvass claims Bryan leads by 100000, while Kentucky North Carolina fusion boosts solid South for Bryan. Illinois Wyoming fusion also cited. Simultaneously a major East St Louis oil plant fire destroys reservoirs, tanks, and cars, with extensive losses and insurance implications.
Dan & Co report a mild but distinct upturn in materials buying, price levels, and product orders across several industries. Wheat and cotton show gains, exports and foreign demand influence markets, while steel and iron goods see contracting prices and renewed activity in mills and major contracts.
New York reporters focus on the Democratic state committee meeting at the Hoffman House. Senator Hill, accompanied by supporters, delivered a tearful appeal to Tammany Hall to stand by him as his political fate hangs on the committee's support. Senator Mill avoided comment and departed for Albany.
In a report from Washington, D C, W J Bryan plans lighter touring days after Josephus Daniels urged more sleep. Daniels advised Bryan to skip pre-dawn starts to avoid physical breakdown during the campaign while Charleston W Va dispatch notes Charles H Crouch must resign or decline to run for circuit judge if appointed.
At the Planters' hotel a banquet for visiting bankers and wives closed the American Bankers Association meeting. William S Witham of Atlanta amused the audience, joking that many banks exist to keep him in the association. He defended the small country bank and likened it to a housewife with a small nurse. The menu card was called the bill of lading of a great chewing match.
Three state mine inspectors Van Stein Edward Roderick and Edward Breonen reported to Mr Hastings on the Twin Shaft disaster at Pittston on July 6 in which 53 lives were lost. They say mine supervisor Mr Lagan erred in judgment going so far into the mine from the shaft bottom and his error caused the deaths of himself and others.
A severe northeast gale swept the English Channel and Bristol Channel overnight. Great vessels were driven ashore off Cornwall while the steamer Teutonic from Liverpool to New York lay delayed at Queenstown for four hours before resuming its voyage at 1 47 a.m.
At five o'clock Thursday evening an explosion of mine gas occurred at Middle Creek colliery near Tremont. Two men died after reaching home at Blackwood two miles away. Gas ignited a safety lamp causing a terrific blast and injuries to several workers.
Sept. 3. Two robbers entered the Western Foundry office at Thirty-fifth Street and Albany Avenue, forcing cashier M. A. Rourke to surrender 1.6 million. They fled in a wagon after a chase, injuring milkman Frank Nyhoff who was shot in the leg. Police pursued but found no trace of the suspects.
The Populist state central committee of Arkansas assesses five cents on each vote for Barker in 1904. Barker won 1494 votes. contributions would build a campaign fund to 1,227.05 to back Bryan and Watson electors in the state.
John M Faulhaber a wealthy wine merchant residing at 536 North Clark street, Chicago, fired shots from a revolver after turning on gas. He was found alive the next morning with critical head injuries and no hope for recovery. The incident followed reported business and domestic troubles.
Fire at Missouri Military Academy in Mexico, Missouri, trapped cadets on multiple floors. Cadet Clopton saved others and helped evacuate with Captain Lowen and Captain Glasscock coordinating efforts. Several cadets suffered broken bones from falls and rope rescues, while Oliver White owed his life to Captain Glasscock during the blaze.
A wealthy Meridian resident, Hon Karnes, was slain in his apartments by Kassabaum using a hatchet. A posse pursued Kassabaum after the crime, with authorities offering a reward for his capture dead or alive. The motive remains unknown but the act is described as premeditated. A photograph of Kassabaum and a physical description are included in the report.
In Meridian area reports say the East Mississippi Railway planned a new Main Street east-side track but an injunction by the Sir Thomas of New ip halted construction after a lengthy argument. The case, viewed as important, continues with high stakes for contestants and property owners.
